Feature Request: New Image from Clipboard

One of my most common workflows is working on clipboard content, but whereas taking a screenshot is super easy, getting it into a Photoshop document is more cumbersome than it could be, with panels, confirmations, extra keystrokes, etc.

Could we please have some or all of:

  • File
    • New Document From Clipboard if there is clipboard content
  • Edit > Paste Special...
    • Paste Into New Document
  • Home panel
    • Ctrl+V creates new image from clipboard
  • New Document panel
    • Ctrl+V creates new image from clipboard
    • Your Recent Items > Clipboard is auto-populated with the clipboard contents (this seems so obvious!)

FWIW Photopea has this; you just press Ctrl+V on the landing page and a new image is created, ready to edit, no panels, confirmations, or additional keystrokes.

Thanks!

I don't think I've ever needed a blank document the size of the clipboard. I very frequently want the clipboard to open in Photoshop. Why should I enter a keystroke to avoid something I never want?

I was specifically replying to the comment regarding GIMP having a "New Layer from Clipboard" when Photoshop doesn't. This is an extension of the OT where it was about a new document from the clipboard.

Creating a new layer from the clipboard is as simple as a single paste command, so is this just semantics? Do we really need a new, separate menu item to paste clipboard content as a new layer when we can just paste the clipboard content using an existing single command?

Creating a new document from the clipboard takes multiple steps, which makes more sense for a new command, outside of DIY actions/scripts which can be triggered using a single command.

So is New Layer from Clipboard.

In all seriousness, what is wrong with Ctrl/Cmd + V to paste in a new layer?  It's a single command.

With a new doc from clipboard, it's Ctrl/Cmd + N plus OK plus Ctrl/Cmd V – so three steps minimum, perhaps four or more if you want to clean up the layers.

I created a script for new document from keyboard as there were multiple steps, so apart from paste, what would new layer from clipboard actually need? Revealing the canvas if the new layer content was larger? Aligning the new layer to the canvas if the default upper left wasn't desired? What else?

@Raster_Eyes

Ctrl+N (new file) is set to the "clipboard" preset by default, in other words the size of the file in the clipboard.

So all you need to do is ctrl+V to paste from the clipboard.

After settling for using GIMP for many years now, and finally back to Photoshop again, I'm realizng that, as much Photoshop is way better overall, I am missing some convenience features GIMP has.

New Image from Clipboard is one of those features. So is New Layer from Clipboard.

In Corel PhotoPaint you go:

Copy image to clipboard

File> New from clipboard

I have used it for years and can never remember how to do it in PhotoShop.

Trying to figure out how to delete my reply, as it does work after all. In Adobe Acrobat I just had to use "Take a snapshot" of the material I wanted for my Photoshop file rather than "Copy".

This doesn't seem to work anymore in Photoshop version 25.7.0, even when the Legacy New Document box is checked in preferences.

I wrote a script for this, let me see if I can find it using the forum search...

Hi @J E L - yes I do the same.

I just think it c/should be 1 step not 3! Especially with the new panels you have to go through now. What a palaver!

EDIT: Make sure in Preferences > General, you have Use Legacy “New Document” Interface checked.

Ah, just noticed this! Good to know.
