History Snapshots should be saved within the file

I may be remembering incorrectly, but I thought the history snapshots used to save within the file back in 2016ish. I went to use the feature recently and was disappointed to see that my history snapshots vanished when I reopened my file.

I understand that you can save different snapshots as different files but that becomes an absolute mess and is way more inconvenient than just saving them within the original file to be referenced upon re-open.

Of course, saving them as their own file can certainly be helpful in some cases and should not be replaced by saving within, but I do feel it is very important to have both options.

@Bryatch - @Jeff Arola has it right, layer comps are saved into the file, not history snapshots.

Depending on the edits, layer comps may or may not be equivalent.

That being said, a script can save all history snapshots to separate files (actions can too but have limitations).

Have you taken a look at using Layer Comps?
