P: Add custom colors for colour coding layers and groups

Wouldn't it be great to be able to use more colours than the 7 defaults for colour coding layers and groups? They're a great way (along with proper naming) to organise complex documents, but having only seven default colours to choose from means they start to become duplicated which pretty much defeats the purpose.

Would be really useful to have the ability (much like with Indesign and Illustrator) to use a wider palette of colours to colour code layers and groups.

I'm bumping this, because for some reason this is still an issue. We *need* extensive color coding options.

Rude is correct. For example, I have over thirty separate groups for a museum project and wouldn't it be expedient, as we're all visual folks, to have a color coded system with more choices. Karlita, being snarky as an adult isn't polite or shows patience. I hope that you're not that way with clients or friends.

No problem. I don't see that you posted that 6 years ago. Here it just says 2 hours. The problem with merging, I suppose.

6 years is a long time, sorry for the link rot.

Your field2.com link goes nowhere. What level of brightness do you use in your interface that yellow kills your eyes? I don't have a problem with the yellow—I use medium dark to avoid the contrast of the darkest dark. But what you say is a good reason for PS to seriously consider adding a custom color option along with more colors.

ROFL. You are SO right. I can't imagine needing more than 3 colors in a well-organized Layers panel.

I don't think tinting the layers would be a bad idea either.

True story: Illustrator gives you a dinky color bar. I was working on a project  with the Dynamic Sketch pen and the Blob Brush, using black. I did something and a bunch of black dots appeared.  I was puzzled there, thinking at first I'd either done something weird, or AI had gone bonkers. I hadn't noticed that my new layer color was black, so of course all those anchor points would be black, and would look exactly  like a new "effect." <sheesh>

Giving layer colors a customizable label would be an interesting feature for me. If you're working in an environment where a PSD gets sent around to multiple people, it would be good to have a way to indicate what layer colors mean what. For example, instead of having "Red, Yellow, Blue, Gray" etc. in the layer properties menu for colors, since the color is pretty obvious already, it would be possible to rename these labels to whatever one desires. For example, one could rename "Red" to "Hover state" or rename "Green" to "Pressed state".

Something like this:

Of course, you could also just make a legend on the document itself, but that's extra work. You could make a smart object for it that you can paste into documents, but the meanings of these colors might change from project-to-project, document-to-document. Having a more permanent and integrated solution would be better in this regard.

Light yellow (and the like) layer options are killing my eyes. See http://field2.com/yellow.png

Why even make light colors an option if they have to be changed, every time?

I'm also a big fan of having an option to coloring the actual layer too, instead of just the visibility column.
