Why pn earth would Adobe drop this hugely successful and uniqe set of plug-ins/filters! I know a lot of people are very unhappy about this. I really hope Adobe changes its mind and comes out with an upgrade/patch to fix this problem.

If they can read the PixelBender language and execute it correctly - then sure, it is possible.

I noticed that some third party coders were able to implement a After Effects Plug-in that can run PixelBender Kernels, I wonder is such thing is possible on the Photoshop side of the house: http://aescripts.com/pixel-bender-ker...

Solved, or at least somewhat solved, I just upgraded to PS6 and used the OilPaint filter in there, its OK. But as you say, its not what the old PB one was.
But it will have to be good enough for me for the time being.
Thank you for all your help and information!
I shall sign off for now.

As far as "user testing" and "data on slider use" - from the reactions on this thread, I think it is obvious that neither was attempted.
We don't want or need the OilPaint filter to be made "more powerful" - we only need it to do what it did before.

I would think that all that Adobe has to do is copy/paste the code from the OilPaint filter in PixelBender into the wrecked version that is in CS6, and job done.

The differences between the OilPaint filter in CS5.5 and CS6 are clear and obvious, and should not need anyone to send examples - all anyone has to do is open the two versions and look at them. There are sliders in the original version that are missing in the new one, and Adobe added a "texture" slider that completely changes the visual effect of the filter from the original.

What is most puzzling to me is, when it was determined that the OilPaint filter was valuable enough to bring into the main app, why it was then changed to be something totally different. [And much less useful.]

Pixel Bender is superior. It has more potential effects results acheivable at the finte level than Oil Paint, some of which cannot be accomplished with ease using combined effects from off standard filters. Oil Pain(t) is a step backward.

P.B. is better at adjusting paint effects for varied image resolutions. Oil Paint's focus is too much on texturing and does not have the same finite control over other aspects of emulating not just the effect of a real world painting but how such would look as a "photographed" image presented in 2D. If you turn down the angular lighting inn O.P., the paint effect almost disappears and all you have is a blurry image.

I use P.B. extensively in various pursuits, and the loss of it put a big hole in my work flow. I have had to reinstall PS5 in order to use it. I make sure anything I save in PS6 is set to maximum compatibility, but sometimes I have to redo an image in CS5 because certain work in PS6 still doesn't show the same in PS5 to continue work flow mid stream. I have to constantly think through what I want for a finished product and then guess whether I need to start in PS5 or PS6... the latter of which is one of the biggest mem-hogs I've even seen in a new program.

Our class is using PS5 (v.12.04x32), but some of the students are using 6(v13).
I still have PS3, thats why I asked about it.
I do know what Im using, but would love to know how to get this Oil Paint plug in.

Today I will ask the other people who have PS6, if they have tried Oil Paint, and how they like it. I did read that its not what it used to be, but if it would fill my needs, then I shall upgrade to PS6.
The Flikr albums sure are impressive.
Thank you for the help and info, if I cant get PixelBender into CS3, I will come back and ask more.

If your class is using Photoshop 3 or 6 That is what is pathetic. Photoshop is now at version 13. Do you actually know what it is you are using or what you need to use?
