P: Remember Reference Point in Transform workflow

Changing the pivot point of a layer/object works fine. But unfortunately after committing the transformation the pivot point always goes back to the centre of the layer/object. Because I do some frame by frame animation in photoshop, it would be very handy to make the pivot point stick to the transformed point. In After Effect & Affinity Photo the anchor point does. Is there a workaround or third-party addon to achieve this behaviour? Thanks for any answer.

Hello Dennis,

thanks for your very useful tips! Yes, with Transform - Step & Repeat the reference point maintains its position for every step. But because the »Step« is for every »Repeat» the same amount it is not that useful for animation - because of the spacing you normally apply to your animation. But working with a temporary help layer is a real help. Thanks again! Greetings from Hamburg, Walter

If you make the object layer a Smart Object, then you can add a temporary layer that you can use to locate the reference point.  When you are finished, turn off or delete the temp layer, and all of the Smart Object layers will update.

Whenever possible, I like to create all of the layers before creating a Frame animation.  You might be able to do this with Transform Step & Repeat which should make it easy to maintain the same reference point.  When that location is critical, I like to place a guide intersection at that location, and snap the grid zero, zero to the guide intersection.  The lets you be 100% accurate because after placing the reference point as close as you can visually, you type zeros in the X and Y fields in the Options Bar giving you perfect accuracy.

BTW  IME Smart Objects don't always play nicely with Step & Repeat.

I've let the team know about this, and it is set to be under review for future enhancements.

Thanks!

Hey, @wabre. Welcome to the Photoshop Community. I am assuming by Pivot point, you're referring to the Reference Point in Transform workflows.

Photoshop currently does not remember the last state for the Reference Point. I'll share this with the team for review.

Thanks!

Hi Smeer K

Thanks for your quick reply! Yes, that was exactly what I meant. Often frame by frame animation in PS means rotating an object relative to a reference point (pendulum/arm). Therefore it really would be a time saver if PS could store the last position of the reference position in a variable -  just like the position of the reference point for rotations in After Effect is remembered (there called »anchor point«).

Kind regards, Walter
