P: Smart Objects: Auto-convert JPGs to PSD

Again, it is not a bug, as has already been repeatedly explained -- that warning to save back to the same filename and filetytpe is there for a reason.

And that is the way Smart Objects are supposed to behave, because that is part of what makes them so powerful (that you can edit in other applications, use linked files, etc.). But Smart Objects are not all-knowing, and cannot track when you save your file to a different filename or filetype (which also changes the filename in most cases), nor can they guess when you want to save off a copy of your child document (they can only track the original).

This is definitely a bug. It doesn't bahave like a smart object should.

No, it is not a bug.

You ignored the warning to save the file back to the same filename and filetype. You saved it as a different filetype (and possibly filename), and thus the smart object can't update because it is looking for a change to the original file, and you saved your changes to a completely different file.

I read the previous posts. The solution is a workaround! It is a bug!

A)
turn OFF the setting "automatically create smart object when placing"
Place jpeg
Convert layer into smart object
double click to edit
edit
close and save
smart object is updated
ALL FINE

B)
turn ON the setting "automatically create smart object when placing"
Place jpeg
double click to edit
edit
close and save
SAVE AS Dialog appears, smart object can't be updated

I definitely call this a bug that hasn't been fixed for 4 years! So when Photoshop automatically creates the smart object during the place command it messes up the process.

Because the user's mistake was resolved.

There is no bug involved at all, just user error.

Ähh? How can this topic be marked as resolved? Even with the newest CC 2014.2 the bug still persists after 4 years! It doesn't matter if you place or drag a jpeg file into PS. As soon as you edit the object and want to save the save as dialog appears. Why the heck do I need to save, fiddle through the files system, just to replace the existing smart object? That is absolute crap and not worth of Photoshop! 4 YEARS!!!

Your comment indicated that you had failed to read the existing posts here. The existing posts explain that this was simply user error, and explains why, plus workarounds.

You removed my comment with the reason "failure to read the topic before posting" -- but I have posted here before over the years about this smart object topic. My comment was very much on topic. But if my voice is silenced here by you, well, then, there it is.

Chris, your comment just now is so know-it-all, it boggles me. It was normal user expectation that was foiled by a change in v5.1. I was used to working this way in previous versions. Now with newer versions I and many others have changed the way we work.
In effect, the smart object does not do what some of us wish it would do. This is not user error.

Yes, it was solved, it was simply user error.
