Photoshop tracks the file and directory location for imported photos and images.

I wish I could get a list of directories where files came from each time I load a new image into a composite in Photoshop. Sometimes I need to find out where the original photo came from on my pc and if I am compositing many photos then it's hard to keep track.

This has come up before:

I know that I have previously answered in more detail on this topic, however, I can't find the other posts.

If you are not using linked smart objects, then how do you "load a new image into a composite"?

A custom workflow could be designed, for example, a script could write metadata for the path+filename for an embedded placed image.

That's what linked smart objects facilitate. Copy/paste or embedded smart object images obfuscate the process as one has to use complicated searches based on metadata.
