selecting unlinked masked layer

When you select a layer from the layers panel that has an unlinked mask, the mask is ALWAYS selected first.  I'd prefer to have the layer selected first instead.  Can that be an adjustable preference? If it is already please let me know how to adjust it.

then it should be a new feature, i'm sure most people want the layer

That's the way it is. You can select the image in Layers if you want to work on the image instead of on the Layer Mask.
