It would help if you could describe what you’re actually tring to do -

I’m experienced with Lightroom but new to photoshop. Will have to give that a try.

What’s wrong with Auto-align > Auto-Blend?

I’ve always found that very reliable (and I do this a lot). If it fails, it’s because the starting images were carelessly shot (parallax error or too much variable areas like water).

However, it is based on large-scale pattern recognition, and doesn’t work well with very fine detail against an empty background. The typical case is astrophotography, starry night skies and so on. For that there are other specialized tools.
