Add Resolution and Scaling Options When Creating a Nest

By default, Premiere creates a nest with the same resolution as the sequence it was created in. The problem with this is that if you are working with video/images that are higher resolution than the source sequence, and you nest them in the sequence, scaling the nest does not preserve the source media's resolution. For example, nesting a 4k clip in a 1080p timeline effectively converts it to 1080p, resulting in a drop in video quality when you increase the nest's scale.

The typical workaround is to scale/reposition the clips within the nest (instead of the nest itself), change the nest sequence settings after you create it, or skip the nest feature and create a new sequence with your desired resolution, adding what you want nested to it, and then bringing that sequence into your main sequence. These workarounds involve way too many steps for something that should be simple. After all, a nest is just a regular sequence and has all the same settings as any other sequence.

I propose adding resolution settings to the pop-up window when creating a nest. You can manually change the resolution or have it autodetect the highest resolution clip that is being nested. If the resolution is changed from the default, there should be additional options to resize the clips/media being nested (None, Scale, Fit, Fill), and how you want the nest resized in the main sequence (None, Scale, Fit, Fill).

As long as the “okay” button is still the immediate focus of hitting the enter key I don’t personally see a downside to adding more functionality to the nest window, however I would say that I think it should remain the sequence resolution by default (with a simple toggle maybe to change it based off clips instead) - I think logically it just makes more sense to default to the active sequence resolution than anything else, that’s what you’re working in and it’s rather trivial to adjust it after the fact.

Yes, I think it should still default to the main sequence resolution and all the additional settings should be optional and pressing enter quickly makes the nest.

Me and my co-workers often work with footage with resolutions much larger than what we deliver in (along with a bunch of different aspect ratios), so we encounter this nest issue often. This request is more for a quality of life improvement; less clicking and menu diving to speed up workflows.

yep I can definitely see how it would be helpful then. Wouldn’t really impact my workflow at all as that situation rarely ever comes up but definitely don’t see the harm in expanding the functionality
