Bring back the old masking tool in premiere

The new masking tool in premiere is terrible. I’m so tired of adobe taking thousands of my dollars for their subscription based crap, and then implementing “updates” that no one asked for while there are bugs that haven’t been fixed for 10 years.

With the new masking tool, I now have to double the amount of steps and triple the amount of time it takes to make a basic mask transition with a straight object passing through the frame. When I have keyframes ON and move the position/path each frame, it doesn’t create a new keyframe. I have to manually click it for EVERY. SINGLE. FRAME. This is ridiculous. You would think oh, the tracker can track a straight line across the screen? WRONG. If its slightly out of focus, like something in your foreground would probably be, it doesn’t even know what it is tracking.

To make this ridiculous and stupid change and then to NOT have a legacy mode is even more stupid. Why am I paying adobe for this garbage?

As soon as my subscription is up with adobe, I’m moving to Resolve. You mean I can pay $300 for a complete program, not have to pay thousands to a subscription, AND STILL receive all the updates, updates that are actually good and beneficial? What a crazy and novel concept. I haven’t switched because I didn’t want to have to relearn another program, but with this crap adobe is putting out, I’m already having to relearn how to do tasks that should be BASIC and SIMPLE. This is ridiculous.

When you want to animate a mask the Program Monitor needs to be in FRAME mode.

Might want to read the HELP on the subject.

Ann is correct about reading the Help on it, as yes, it is totally different, and if you don’t read the Help, you won’t be able to use it well or fast.

As you would have to do if you went to Resolve, as their masking system is very different, and has it’s share of likers and haters. But “power windows” … Resolve has a ton of R-only terms for standard video post things … are a very different application of masking.

The new Premere/Ae masking is far more powerful in capability, in general … and for many users, as fast or faster to deploy once you learn how to use it for your needs. For some users, it is not as fast, and yes, there have been some glicthes  for some hardware/media combinations for some users.

As someone who’s used both Pr and Resolve for over a decade … and as I teach pro colorists also, a lot of time working in Resolve  and talking resolve with buds … Resolve is still a better grading app, and the editing bits are … better … than before, but still lacking in many of the keyboard shorts and stuff we’re used to in Premiere.

Plus, as the UI is not at all user-configurable … and I hate the UI … it’s not of interest to me as an editing app. Everyone’s mileage always varies, so you might actually like it. A good friend thinks it’s the most intuitive UI ever created. After a decade, I still struggle figuring out where the many contextual menus are buried … some hidden rather well, I compllmented their staff on that amazing ability at NAB … so we look at each other and shake our heads.

Resolve is simply a loss-leader for BM to sell hardware, period. They make no money on sales of Resolve, I doubt the actual sales income each year pays for the income recording system even. So understand, they have a specific viewpoint on what they do and when. Such as … all of my many colorist acquaintances, including some of the bigger names in fancytown CA … have long lists of bugs and ill-designed things and feature requests that haven’t been handled in years.

They still like it overall, but … there’s a lot posts on Resolve forums about how it’s becoming as bad as Premiere. I’ve personally not upgraded to R21 yet, as some buds have not been spot on pleased yet. Another build maybe.
