Compliant ITU-R BT.601 & SMPTE 386M metadata tags on SD IMX50 MXF exports
Problem:
When exporting standard-definition MXF OP1a files (specifically IMX50 / D-10), Premiere Pro does not write clean ITU-R BT.601 color descriptors or proper SMPTE 386M essence headers. Instead, files export with legacy/ambiguous color tags and proprietary XMP schemas. As a result, more modern / up to date Automated Quality Control (AQC) engines using strict validation (such as Telestream Qualify on engine 5.1 checking against ITU-R BT.1702-2) reject these files immediately during container parsing before video QC can begin.
Requested Solution:
-
Ensure SD MXF (IMX50 / D-10) exports write explicit, standards-compliant ITU-R BT.601 matrix, transfer, and primaries headers into the MXF picture essence descriptors and sequence headers.
-
Provide an option in the export settings to omit non-standard proprietary XMP metadata from the MXF structural headers to ensure native compatibility with strict broadcast ingest and AQC systems.
Current Workaround:
We are forced to export to ProRes first to scrub the metadata, then re-encode via external cloud transcoding tools, which adds unnecessary time and compute cost to automated broadcast delivery workflows.
