Dropping a transition into the Sequence

Professional editor here: why doesn't the Sequence window get selected when you drop a transition into the Sequence? Seems like it should to avoid needless extra clicks...

Just for your reference, the Adobe Press book  "Classroom in a Book" on Premiere Pro, calls transitions 'transition effects'.

transition or effect

I understand what you are saying, but whether it is a transition of an effect, the Timeline is still not selected. I work in the Timline when I am refining my edit and putting in transitions and effects. I don't want to be stuck in the Effects window.

Using the spacebar is not very efficient nor professional as you can easily grab a clip and move it inadvertantly. Also it involves an extra mouse click. It might be fine when you are editing a 5 min video, but when you are cutting a long piece it gets tedious. Using the keyboard is always preferable (shift K). I understand assigning a new keystroke to focus on the Timeline, but why doesn't it select automatically? That is where the edit is happening. I don't need the Effects window to continue to be selected.

So what? That wasn't my question.

You started off incorrect, as a transition is not the same as an effect.

An effect might act as a transition, but its is still an effect. Two complete different things within Premiere.

Alright, I see what you're saying here.  I simply use play (spacebar) rather than SHIFT-K when I drop an effect, which plays fine, so your situation has never come up for me.

Since automatically moving focus to the timeline for various functions is something you're obviously used to, as a workaround, you might consider remapping that funtion from SHIFT-3 to a more handy key. (Maybe swap with the tilde.)

As a pro, you know that Premiere isn't FCP7, isn't Avid, isn't Resolve, isn't FCPX -- and that each NLE needs to be driven differently.

Meanwhile, see how many upvotes you get for this idea.

I want to drop an effect and do Shift K immediately, without having to poke around and re-select the Timeline (Shift 3). Same with up and down arrows as I am dropping clips from the Source window. If I do up and down arrow it should select the Timeline (it did in FCP7!)

Yes thanks.  Stan I know about the default transition, but it would make sense for the Timeline to be selected when you drop an effect on it. Also why isn't the Timeline automatically selected when you do up and down arrows? It jumps to the edits but doesn't activate the window?

@beautardy,

I get your result:

Focus in timeline, as soon as click in Effects panel to drag effect, forcus switches to Effect panel. Once drop effect, the focus remains in the effect panel.

Note that this does not happen if you use the default effect keyboard shortcut. Focus is in timeline, effect applied, focus remains in timeline. But the options for such shortcuts re limited.

Stan

Works fine for me too.  So if that wasn't your question -- what was?
