As a video editor working on a long-form documentary with extensive footage and numerous interviews, I often need to manage and track the segments of clips I've used across various sequences. While the current feature that shows how many times a clip has been used is helpful, it can be improved to better suit my workflow, similar to how Adobe Prelude functioned.

Proposed Feature: Enhanced Clip Usage Tracking

Purpose: To provide editors with a comprehensive tool that prevents accidental reuse of clip segments by clearly indicating where and how each segment of a clip has been utilized across a project.

Key Features

Detailed Usage Tracking:

• Display the specific segments of a clip that have been used in various sequences.

• Indicate the IN/OUT points of each segment within the clip.

Interactive Hyperlinks:

• Allow users to click on usage instances, which will act as hyperlinks, taking them directly to the IN point of that clip in the specified sequence.

Integrated GUI:

• Option to display this information in the Source Monitor window, accessible through the wrench icon in the lower-right corner.

• Alternatively, provide a separate window dedicated to clip usage tracking for a more comprehensive overview.

Color-Coded Usage Indicators:

• Implement color-coding for different sequences. For example, each sequence could be assigned a unique color, and the usage segments within the clip would be highlighted with these colors for quick visual identification.

Segment Locking:

• Allow users to lock specific segments of a clip to prevent accidental edits or deletions. This would be especially useful for crucial parts of interviews or key scenes.

Usage Summary Panel:

• Add a summary panel that provides an overview of all sequences where the clip has been used, including detailed IN/OUT points, duration of the used segments, and a quick preview option.

Cross-Project Usage Tracking:

• Enable tracking of clip usage across multiple projects within the same workspace. This would be beneficial for editors working on series or related projects where the same footage might be reused.

Export Usage Report:

• Allow exporting of a usage report in a text or spreadsheet format. This report would list all the segments of the clip used, along with their corresponding sequences and IN/OUT points, aiding in documentation and review processes.

Advanced Search and Filters:

• Implement advanced search and filter options to quickly find clips based on their usage status. For instance, users could search for clips that are partially used, fully used, or unused.

Integration with Markers and Annotations:

• Integrate with existing markers and annotations, allowing users to see usage information alongside any notes or markers they have added to the clip, providing a comprehensive view of the clip's context and usage.

Usage Alerts:

• Set up customizable alerts that notify the user if they attempt to use a segment of a clip that has already been used. These alerts can be configured based on user preferences (e.g., for specific sequences or projects).

Collaboration Features:

• For collaborative projects, include the ability to see which team member has used specific segments of the clip. This can help in managing and coordinating efforts in team-based editing environments.

Benefits:

 • Prevents accidental reuse of footage segments within the same project.

• Enhances project organization by providing a clear visual representation of clip usage.

• Streamlines the editing process by allowing quick navigation to specific clip instances across sequences.

Shortcuts/Functionality:
User can mark the IN/OUT point of a clip selected, hit a shortcut/button, and it would automatically add a highlight on the clip and add it to a bin/GUI window and mark whether it's in use or not.
