Export captions as .vtt (WebVTT) files

I'd like the option to export closed captions as .vtt files. Some of my clients only accept this format, and doing it manually or with different software is either very time consuming or costly.

I’m kinda aghast this hasn’t happened yet given the speed of change around AI. This seems like such a no brainer it makes no sense it’s not been implemented yet.

This option does seem to exist in Frame io, it would be great to port this into Premiere for direct caption editing.

Hi Adobe, some training platforms are requiring subtitles to be in .vtt format instead of .srt and Premier unfortunately still doesn't have that export option yet. We are able to convert .srt text using our own LLM, however it would be more efficient to be able to export directly from the program. Hope this can be added soon to save some extra steps, thank you!

Why isn’t this done yet?

Working hard or hardly working? Soon, it's going to be 3 YEARS since this thread was opened, and one year from my initial reply to you. Keep pushing Ai slop. I already switched to davinci resolve for my personal freelance projects and if asked, baring in mind all the cost-cotting everywhere these days, I will pitch it at work also.

Because I work for a government agency and cannot use tools or sites that haven't been approved for use, especially for sensitive infomation that I make resources regarding. Adobe, with the thousands of accounts the different governments around the world are paying for should be able to meet the basic needs of accessibility in 2025. I have Davinci Resolve at home whos automated captions is significantly more accurate and exports to vtt. How has Adobe Premier not reached parity?

Again, I would recommend checking out (https://editingtools.io/subtitles/). As far as I am aware, this does not use AI to convert. It simply is a system that is programmed to one-to-one convert the VTT to SRT or whatever format you may need, and in the process, even do some time adjustments if you'd like.

FYI, my current process is export from Adobe, open in note pad, copy paste in copilot and ask to convert to vtt while also fixing any issues like correct regional english, and then paste back into notepad save as, the file 'save as type - all files' add a .vtt to file name.

Others may have different stances but I draw a hard line for ethical
reasons on not relying on AI, wherever I can. That rules out this solution
and all solutions others have proposed that opt to use AI, so I will keep
looking.
Thanks!

In the mean time, why not use an online converter… since Ai will likely bodge some things on the way. This is a job for a tool that is purpose built and makes a 1 to 1 copy.

I found this real quick, maybe it's helpful (not affiliated): https://editingtools.io/subtitles/

SubTitle Edit appears to be Windows-Only. I'm on a Mac as are many other Premiere editors.  I've been using DaVinci Resolve for caption conversion from .srt to .vtt, but it would save a few steps to just have a .vtt export option directly in Premiere...and I can't imagine it being that challenging to code. I think most users wouldn't need the extras that programs that create .vtt sometimes adds (<b>, </b>, etc) just a straight convert that adds WEBVTT to the top and changes the commas to periods in the timecodes. But what do I know, I'm just a simple country video editor who's about to be replaced by AI.
