It's not obvious, but for most users, this was not intended to replace the old project startup process. This is a replacement of the "unuseds options" of the old new project dialog. And it's easy to start a project the old way, actually.

Think of the old dialog ... you had project Name, Location, a bunch of options you set once and never touched again, and ... Create. Right?

So what you did was type a Name, set a Location, and ... Create. Ignoring most of that panel.

Now ... they moved all those options you set once & never again to the File menu. And replaced them with a "flat file" type project setup that is apparently (from the people I've been around) super useful in TV newsrooms and for "Major Corporate Inhouse Video Production" staffers.

Not so much for the rest of us. But it's easy to do the old process ... simply:

  • type a Name
  • set project Location
  • first time, make sure nothing in the 'center' section is starred, no options on the right blue
  • Click Create

And your project opens as before, and use however you built your projects ... MediaBrowser or Project panel to import assets.

Now if they gave us the ability to tab to the Create button from setting a Location, that would make this actually smoothly working. I still do NOT like having to leave the keyboard to mouse clear over to the Create button all the freaking way across the screen.
