Improvements to Splitting and Text Import in Transcript and Caption Workflows

1. Line breaks are ignored when importing text files [Issue] When importing a custom script (.txt file), the line breaks in the text data are completely ignored, forcing users to manually split segments all over again. [Request] Please add an option to "Split segments based on text file line breaks" when importing text files.

2. Manual splits in the "Transcript" panel are reset when creating captions [Issue] Even if we manually and cleanly split segments using "Split Segment" in the Transcript panel to match the context of the speech, clicking "Create Captions" completely ignores these manual splits. The software recalculates the splits based solely on maximum character length and duration settings, ruining the adjustments made. [Request] Please add an option in the "Create Captions" preferences to "Preserve current segment splits from the Transcript panel."

3. The behavior of the "Split" function in the Captions panel [Issue] When splitting a caption in the Captions panel or on the timeline, the text is not actually split at the cursor's position. Instead, the entire original text is simply duplicated into both the first and second blocks. This forces the user into an incredibly inefficient process of manually deleting the excess text from both blocks every time they split a clip. [Request] Please change the behavior so that when a caption is split, the text data is actually divided at the specified cursor position, rather than duplicated.

Improving these specifications would dramatically increase the efficiency of captioning workflows and further enhance the usability of Premiere Pro. Thank you very much for considering these updates for future releases.

    @Ftopi,

    These are good areas for improvements. Upvoted for the general issues.

    1 We need more information on this one. I can import srt files to PR 26.0.1 on Win 11, and the line breaks are respected, with no code other than the line break in the file or with the regular code for line break - <br />. A file with a .txt extension imports, but does not create a caption track.

    Can you provide a sample file?

    2 True. I  think it would require special codes to set “line break for captioning,” since most line breaks in the transcript may not be intended by most users. And your request is for an option, so it could work. Generally, I have assumed this is more complicated since the timing of words in the transcript is not carried to the captions.

    This is also complicated, since you can’t really set line breaks until you know how the captions will be configured until the create captions dialogue settings have been applied. That an area where many editors would like more granular control, and gets in to the problem of what happens to your caption edits when you must recreate a caption track. And transcripts often get very chopped up once you start deleting pauses etc.

    In any event, I recommend this as a workflow: a) split transcript segments only to correct speaker identification errors or to help context for text-based editing, b) correct spelling and similar in the transcript (since it carries these corrections throughout editing no matter when or how many times captions are created), c) correct caption line breaks etc only after the edit is locked, and d) consider captions created earlier as temporary to aid in editing (and don’t bother with formatting issues).

    3 Upvote this feature request, and see my other reply there for more information about time codes:

    There are 2 issues here, the important one being the text content being repeated in both parts of the split. The other one is that you can select the time for the split only in the timeline. Otherwise, from the caption tab, it splits in the  middle only.

    Hi Stan, Thank you for your detailed reply and helpful advice!

    Regarding point 1, I actually imported a plain text file (.txt), not an .srt file. As you mentioned, it seems that .txt files don't create a caption track properly. I understand now that this is why the line breaks weren't respected.

    I will also make sure to upvote the feature request for point 3. Thanks again for your workflow tips!
