Modern "New Project" workflow doesn't import footage in folders

1. Description:

I've always thought Premiere's ability to receive an entire folder from Windows Explorer or Mac Finder and process the contents in such a way that (1) all the folders are preserved the way you organized them in your actual file system, (2) all recognizable media files within these folders are imported and begin processing, and (3) any files that aren't recognized as media are listed for the user at the end-- was one of the most fantastic things about it that really set it apart from most other editing programs I'd ever used.

When the update came which introduced the "Create Project" screen, adding an extra few steps before you can navigate to the familiar Edit Workspace, I wasn't thrilled, but I figured I'd try to see the bright side and work with this new... "offering." But imagine my dismay when, after I'd figured out the tricks needed to navigate to the folder I needed, I clicked "Create" and suddenly all my footage was just plopped together into the "Project" Panel, and a new Sequence created slapping all my shots together back to back.

What a waste of processing power. I waited a moment to see if this was a momentary glitch, and maybe things would get sorted in a moment, but when no such magic occurred, I just highlighted everything in "Project," deleted it from the Project, and then reimported it using the old drag-and-drop method and created a new sequence.

I can understand wanting to create a tool that holds the hands of first-timers and guides them to the Creativity Field, but in that process, why would you skip one of the program's greatest geniuses? Chances are, IF the artist importing footage already has it sorted into directories, then they CARE about organized footage. If I were a programmer, trying to account for the occasion that someone wanted the chance to import multiple folders of footage and have it all plopped together without separation, I would maybe make it a non-default checkbox option.

As it is, I find no way to make this "Create Project" process helpful or useful for me. If anything, it makes the process more laborious because I first have to click to get a file browser and choose the location to save the Project File itself (this used to automatically appear when you clicked "New Project"), and then I have to navigate a unique, unfamiliar file browser to get my footage (which is usually close to where I want to save the Project File, but Premiere doesn't try to presuppose that) (and which I usually already have open in my file browser, waiting to drag-and-drop) and click the file(s) or folder(s) only to begin the organization process again after clicking "Create." Perhaps a Preference should be made to allow experienced users to use the original, minimal-steps workflow.

As a programmer, I didn't say anything at first because I figured this "Create Project" screen was a new feature, but integrating the new folder import with the old folder-to-bin import shouldn't be too hard, since you should just be able to trigger one function using the other. I figured it'd be all fixed after an update or two, but here we are. I thought that maybe Adobe was planning to add new features to this "Create" UI which would shorten other parts of the normal editing workflow, but nothing so far.

2. This is valuable to me because I like to save time. Each time I have to create a new project with the new method, it takes double the time to get to the actual editing that it used to take. I have come to dread creating new projects, in many ways. Sometimes, even if I won't be using any of the same files, I'll just use "Save As..." on a project I'm working on and relocate and rename it, then delete all the footage in "Project," just to avoid going through that tedious new process. Please help me out here. Each of us only has so many seconds left in our hourglasses.

Thank you.

Don't use it then.

This was simply intended as a replacement for the old "new project" dialog, with changes to the options presented. Most everyone gets fouled up with this at first.

The cache & such options were moved to a menu item, and this separate, and new, project startup process replaced them on an enlarged screen. That's what this is.

It is great for many users such as newsroom editors and major Corp video teams. Not so much, nor intended, for most "general" editors to use.

So do as you used to do. Same process, actually.

  • Type a project Name.
  • Set Location
  • Click Create to start and open that new project.

Then in the Project panel or MediaBrowser panel, import as before including folders.
