Playhead is Not selecting clips macOS

Hello,
The playhead is not selecting clips during playback; it only selects them when playback is stopped.
As a result, it is impossible to add markers to clips on the fly—markers are instead applied to the sequence timecode.
See the attached file.
System: macOS 14.7.1 (Sonoma)
Premiere Pro 25.1.0 (Build 73)

Regards, Alex

Yea, what he's asking for would actually be quite handy at times.

You know how you adjust the audio track mixer on the fly during playback, right?

You can't do that with color though, because like the post notes, it doesn't change selected clip until you stop playback. So if you just try to say bump "exposure" up a titch as a clip goes by, what you do is bump exposure on the clip selected when you started playback, not the currently visible clip.

Everyone's mileage always varies ...

Hi, @Kevin-Monahan

I am switching to Premiere after 20 years on Avid (sorry, Ann Bens—I had to mention it).

Markers on the fly is the fastest way to mark shots when editing a news piece under tight deadlines. Avid's logic is very simple: the marker is placed on the top selected track in the timeline (equivalent to the blue Targeting Track Selector in Premiere). You can also easily change a marker’s location by selecting the track destination in the Markers Window afterward. All markers remain available if the sequence is loaded in the Source Monitor. It would be great to have the same functionality added to Premiere.

Premiere (and also Resolve) does not see the Clip Markers when the sequence is loaded in the Source Monitor. You also cannot Go to Next/Previous if the marker is on the clip. The workaround I found is to open the Markers Window.

Alex

Thanks for the context on Media Composer, Alex. I apologize for that generalization. I'm wrong.

Ah, that's right I remember cutting on Media Composer and using locators (I was orginally taught MC at an Avid boot camp and got hardcore, but then switched to FCP shortly after). I appreciate your added context, so, welcome to the forums and welcome to Premiere Pro. I hope I can be a guide for you, as I can relate to your journey.

Locators are marker-like but are a completely different system than those used by, say, the Premiere Pro or FCP gang. If you would like a marker system like that, the current one would need to be completely scrapped. What you want is definitely a feature request. I think adding that feature might be easier than creating something like "Locators" in MC, to be honest. If you are a news cutter and use clip markers that are added on the fly to assist you, I hope the team will respond to your request. Thanks for the workaround, by the way. Any other notes you would make as you discover your new workflow woud be helpful in new posts.

I would be happy to help you advocate for the feature you requested

Thanks,
Kevin

Please do not refer to other software just to prove a point.

I will move from bugs to Ideas board

It's a good feature request, and one I've not seen it before, to be honest, @Alex.1. Adding clip markers on the fly during playback is not commonly done by pro editors in the past (raises hand, too), so other NLEs previous to Resolve did not bother to add the feature. Randy U's, Final Cut Pro was not able to perform the task to my knowledge (he also designed Premiere Pro, amongst many other apps like iMovie and Aperture). Maybe someone with a better knowledge of other legacy NLEs can comment.

Thanks again for raising the issue. I hope the team can implement this request ASAP. Upvoted!

Cheers,
Kevin

Hi @Ann Bens

If the selection is set to follow the playhead, it should do so during playback.

If this is not a bug, the design should align with the logic of the setting. Resolve can do it.

Dont think this is a bug but rather by design.

If you nest the clips you will be able to set clip markers. (not ideal)
