Please improve the masking tool in Premiere

Manipulating a points of a mask on an effect in Premiere Pro is a pain in the butt, especially compared to After Effects. It's very difficult to accurately grab a point and simply move it to a different position. I invariably end up adding another point or pulling the bezier curve instead of just repositioning the point. I ask that the Premiere team open up After Effects to notice how much easier it is to adjust the points on a mask. Ask the After Effects team how they do it and just copy what they do. One of the biggest frustrations of all Adobe products is how inconsistent tool behavior is from program to program.

What annoys me most is not being able to draw a mask with the Pentool without setting a bezier point.

I am so careful not to drag the mouse but still manage to set a bezier point.

Its a big pita to get the bezier vertex change to a normal vertex.

I always have to start with a rectangular shape just to avoid those bezier vertex.

I have noticed a small thing that makes it a bit easier to move a point. If you zoom out from whatever you are making points on Premiere Pro will sometimes let you move that point.

And I have pushed for years for getting at least as much of Ae's vastly better tracking system into Premiere. And am rather disappointed we haven't. 

 

The ability of Ae to track a ton of points faster (and more accurately) than Pr can track say six, is notable.

Manipulating those vertexes can be a real pain in the-you-know-where.

Often drawing with Pentool you end up with bezier nodes you dont want, and it is a pain to change them to plain nodes.

But I'm still curious as to the differences, as in a decade of use, I've never had issues.

 

You do need the screen res up a bit from "fit", but then about anytime I'm masking I need that so that I can set points outside the image anyway.

 

Most of the time I don't even full-screen for mask work, and still can easily grab a point and yank it somewhere.

 

So that's why I was wondering about your hardware. Trying to see what possible differences there are that cause such a problem for you.

 

All that said, for intense masking, Ae is always the better choice. I just like to avoid Ae when I can.

I think the type of hardware is irrelevent since the tool is much easier in After Effects. This points to programming choices and not end-user hardware choices.

I upvoted, as why not, right? Any improvement for users is a Good Thing.

 

That said, I've not had any difficulty selecting a mask point to move, personally. So I'm curious what your hardware is, and things like mouse/pen tab, trackball, what?

 

What size monitor are you working on? Do you every full-screen the Program monitor panel to do your mask point selections? A tap of the ~ key goes to full screen, another back ...

I totally agree and support this Kevin, my solution for this (which is not efficient) i replace the video layer with after effect compostion via premiere and do the masking in after effect.
