Project-Based Location for Media Cache Files

Hello Premiere Pro Community and Developers,

I'd like to propose an enhancement to the way Premiere Pro handles the storage of media cache files, specifically the .pek and .cfa files. Currently, the location of these files is configured globally in the program's preferences under Media Cache settings. This approach requires manual intervention to change the location for each new project if we want to keep project files and cache files together, which is not very practical for those of us managing multiple projects.

Suggestion: I believe a more streamlined and project-friendly approach would be to allow users to set the media cache location on a per-project basis. This could be integrated into the Project Settings or Scratch Disks settings, where we could have an option to select "Same as Project" for media cache files. Such a feature would automatically store all media cache files in the designated project folder, thus keeping all related files consolidated and making project archiving and portability much easier.

Thank you for considering this enhancement. I believe it would be a valuable addition for many users.

Although for some purposes those files need to be elsewhere, the devs have told me that for best working of the app, those do need to be on the local machine, a fast internal drive.

So maybe they "see" a difference that you and I don't? Anyway, I'm always up for giving users more options on about anything.

Exactly, except for for the .pek files which can only be set globally from "Preferences" and not from the Project's Scratch Disks window.

Whether you run in Production mode, as I do, or the old stand-alone Project mode, in the Production or Project settings dialog (Main menu system) there is the Scratch Disk tab. That's where you set the default to be with the project/production or "custom", where you set the specific location.

If you select Custom, you set a default location for each for your needs.

I have an ssd drive attached for all caches, etc,,,  Gotta say Resolve gets wonky if you dont have your media drive attached where your some of your caches are stored.   one tb ssd is more than sufficient for premiere caches for the large documentary projects I work on and other uses for this always connected  drive

I'll want to check when I get to the computer later. There used to be an option for project based cache files, true. I thought there still was somewhere, so I'll have to check.

As if there isn't, there should be.
