Remove auto-add audio tracks

Currently, Premiere Pro adds audio tracks to a sequence whenever a file with more audio tracks than the sequence contains is opened in the Source Monitor. So, say I have a sequence with four audio tracks. If I open a clip in the Source Monitor that has 8, four more tracks are automatically added to the Sequence. This is behavior is fine for the auto-generation of NEW sequences, but frustrating in that it modifies an existing sequence with no user input whatsoever. The functionality for adding tracks, as well as source patching and track targeting, works fine, and this behavior is more of a bug than a feature.

We also can't hide the Mix track which is annyoing but a whole sepereate issue. That's been asked for as well.

It's insane. You can't even make a timeline without audio tracks if your cutting something without sound.

The effort and testing the change would require are in no way'little'.

Please explain how exactly. How is adding a preference of whether to do it automatically or not so difficult that it requires so much testing? Blackmagic literally added a check mark for this toggle after one ask in a forum thread. Ben said it's a two-year anniversary, but it's been going longer than that. I honestly believe that's probably hundreds of editor hours lost battling these unneeded and unwanted audio tracks that were added.

Not so; you actually have allies 'on the inside'.

The "Under review" status on this thread, is accurate.

Ahhh thanks @Ben Holmes Editout for commemorating this 2-year anniversary of such a simple feature request. It's so strange that we are 2+ years into this little suggested fix and yet nothing. I almost think at this point it's not being fixed just out of spite for all of us that's been asking / begging / complaining about this for so long.

I've noticed that the two year anniverary of this request being ignored passed without comment so I'm just resurfacing it. Just to confirm it is still deeply annoying to anyone who deals with multi-channel audio, and as someone who freqeuntly onboards editors from Avid to Premiere, I can confirm it continues to mystify everyone who comes into contact with it. It remains the single most inexplicable thing in Premiere, and comes after Adobe made significant changes to other parts of the audio workflow such as dynamic waveforms which have introduced multiple bugs into 25.2 like inconsistent copy/paste behaviour and playback problems. Maybe it would be a good idea to bundle a sinple one-time-only "do you want to add new tracks" pop up with a "never show this again" option as I suggested about 20 months ago. Many thanks.

AVID doesn't do this unless you physically add a new track in the Sequence. I don't want to use other tracks to edit with if I don't need them.

Yes! This seems like a great solution: add the ability for editors to choose to disable auto-track generation. When inserting clips we could choose to enable it -- but most savvy editors know how to adjust source targeting for inserts and will simply disable this feature permanently. Because this topic/request continues to be brought up, for years and years, and is supported by community experts taking time to write articles explaining professional reasons behind continued concern, this edit feature begs Adobe's attention for further review. Premiere editors have the choice to "keep focus on Timeline when performing inserts and overwrites". Could there be a preference check-box to "override creation of auto-generated tracks when..." option added to the next update? There would be much appreciation for this option! 🙏

I just thought it was worth pointing out that Blackmagic added an option to toggle automatically adding tracks on and off in the new Resolve 19.1 update.

It really shouldn't be this difficult.

Yea that is a handy shortcuts. I mapped that to a hot key loooooong ago. It does help but it's still too much extra work for a "feature" that shouldn't have been defaulted in the first place.
