Search Bins, Finds, & Filters + MetaData = PPro Power... with outages.
A few observations about Search Bins and their ability/limitations when working with XMP Metadata.
1) The "Create Search Bin" / "Edit Search Bin" Popup
In one moment it offers the promise of the ability to find what you want when you want. A moment later it seems like a search filter from email app c. 2004:
- Two total search filter terms connected by AND and OR. Ideally the window would begin with 1 only, accommodate as many as needed. Mac OS window search offers a compelling powerful alternative.
- Currently does not seem to accommodate ("contains", "is", "is not", "begins with", "ends with", wildcards, etc.).
- It accommodates searching a total of 21 specific XMP metadata properties plus the umbrella "All Metadata", but a far cry from the huge array of XMP properties available. User-added custom XMP properties are nowhere to be had. That not only reduces its power, it would seem to contradict PPro's otherwise gregarious embrace of MetaData management.
- The only access to editing the search terms seems to be via context-clicking the Search Bin from the Project Panel. Would be extremely convenient to access search terms from the open Search Bin panel itself.
- An ability to save Search Bin terms would allow a smart bin to change contents quickly and fluently -- allowing you "one bin to rule them all".
- A Search Bin Panel's "Video Usage" and "Audio Usage" column pulldowns work differently than they do in a regular Bin Panel. Although they do show the related clips, the pulldowns are mysteriously are greyed out and won't pull up the item when selected.
2) The "Find" popup.
- Unlike the "Search Bin Popup" does have things like "Contains", "Starts With", "Ends With", "Matches Exact". Great!!
- but, No wild cards
- And again, a max of 2 terms.
3) "Filter Bin Content" -- the filter input at the top of every bin.
- Generates no small amount of confusion because of its insistence on not allowing a 'flat file' display of results (Again, the Mac OS Finder search offers a good model, to the extent that it transforms the window from a standard folder window to a results window in which folder hierarchies disappear and keep the feature un-cluttered. By contrast PPro leaves the folders, often empty, resulting in an obstacle course of seeming hits but which are really empty results)
Improving on these features opens up the possibility of transcending the limitations of bin/folder hierarchies that often look great but are very limiting in practice. PPro's Search Bin has enormous potential, is really close. A few more features and they unleash a project management power house.
