Shortcut for closing caption box after editing

I wish there were a keyboard shortcut when you are done editing a caption box. It ruins my workflow by moving my hand over to the mouse to click outside the captions box to push the Space Bar for further playback..

Ex. cmd/control + Enter would save the caption box and make further playback with Space Bar possible.

@Kerstin Ebert @Alexander Riss,

Beta 24.2.0.15.

Are there shortcuts to get from the Timeline to the Captions tab? Most Window -> panel commands shift focus. But when in the timeline, a shortcut to show the Text panel will show it, but will not change focus to it. I can only see how to use the new caption under playhead/near playhead option if I click the Caption tab.

@Arne_B described shortcuts for advancing to another segment via line operations. There is still no way via keyboard shortcut to extend a selection to another segment, correct? Easily done via mouse drag, of course.

FYI, I just noticed that one of my pet peeves is fixed: Window -> Text now shows a check mark next to it if it is open. It just "bugged" me!

Hi @Arne_B,

we worked on some imrpovements around the editing of captions via keyboard shortcuts.

In the upcoming 24.1 release version you'll be able to open a caption segment within playhead position when you hit the Enter key in the Captions panel. Also, in the latest beta build version 24.2.0x17, when the playhead is positioned between 2 caption segments, hitting Enter will open the caption that's closer to the playhead.

I hope that works for you!

Best regards,

Kerstin

@Alexander Riss,
I think I found it by being curious!

Select to Previous Line: I assigned Shortcut to be = Control+Shift+Up arrow.
Select to Next Line: –||– = Control+Shift+Down arrow

Very handy when reviewing caption by caption!

I made some useful shortcuts for some what faster workflow when in more reviewing language and merge/split captions (caption sements by caption segment):

  • Option+Command+Enter = Edit selected caption text
  • Option+Command+M = Merge selected caption segments
  • Option+Command+S = Split Caption Segment Under Playhead

, but are there any shortcuts for selecting the previous/next caption segment,@Alexander Riss?
Like:

Shift+Down = Select Caption segment(s) below

Shift+Up= Select Caption segment(s) above

@Stan Jones,
Ah, I see. I will try to make an "edit segment" assignment for keyboard shortcuts. Thank you for taking the time to bring this to my attention.

@Arne_B,

I suspect that your keyboard shortcuts do not have "edit segment" assigned to the Enter key. Your video clearly shows that you are in the Text panel (and yes, transcript or caption tab should work), but hitting Enter activates the application default for Enter: "Render effects in work area" (and start playback from the beginning). I get this if I delete the "edit segment" assignment.

"Edit segment" is one of the new Text Panel shortcuts, so when you are in the Text panel, it overrides the Application level shortcut.

@Alexander Riss

"does editing via "return" work if you stop on a caption segment?"

Unfortunately, no. It just jumps back to the start of the sequence, as described earlier.

Thank you for the detailed recording - does editing via "return" work if you stop on a caption segment? i can only imagine that by some unlucky timing you end up between segments when entering edit mode, which causes the jump to segment 1 as it seems. It would probably make a better workflow to instead open the "closest" segment for editing instead of one which clearly makes no sense in this case - let me take this up with the team. Thank you again for bringing this to our attention! This is exactly the kind of workflow issues that can make a big difference in productivity!

Best regards,
 Alexander

@Alexander Riss
Yes. Im on Version 23.5.0 (Build 56).
Yes. I play with Space and stop with Space. Then try to push Enter, but then I start from the beginning. As @Stan Jones mentioned, I also tried "Hitting Enter enters edit mode for that caption, even as the timeline continues to play".

I'm in the Text panel and the Captions tab, right? Are we misunderstanding each other, or is Enter + Esc just possible in the Transcript tab? See screen capture. (I have made my workspace. The physical set-up is a MacBook 16" under an external monitor).
