Source transcription offer no options

Upvoted. I agree that having some kind of option for controlling multiple clip transcription would be useful. And after the test I describe below, I am again convinced that the “Speaker labeling” section in preferences should be pulled out of the automatic setting so you can set it for manual and automatic at once, and even if you don’t turn on automatic.

At first I thought you had the “best” workaround for what you describe. But read on and see what my experiments showed!

Yes, avoid clicking that “transcribe” button for untranscribed in the sequence view: it is a form of automatic transcription and does not present the option for Speaker selection. But can we trick it into setting multiple speakers which having automatic transcription turned off? My test says yes.

Edit preferences and turn on Automatic transcription. Select for separate speakers. Click OK. Immediately go back in and turn automatic transcription off. The selection for separate speakers is greyed out, but the selection remains. And it remains that way if you exit PR and create a new project.

When you then select the transcribe “untranscribed clips” in your sequence, it will separate speakers. Also, as shown in your screenshot, you can deselect any clip that you don't want to be transcribed.

It does not, btw, turn this on for manual  transcription. But once you select “separate speakers” in a manual operation, it is sticky unless you reset preferences. And my “trick the speaker setting in automatic” also should stay unless preferences are reset.

As I’m saying the choice is not for one speaker or multiple, it is “Yes, separate speakers” or “No, don’t separate speakers.” . If you have only one speaker, they are labeled “Speaker 1.” If there is more than one, you get “Speaker 1,” “Speaker 2,” etc. If you don’t separate, you get one speaker named “Unknown.” For all of these, including Unknown, you can edit that speaker name, and you can add speakers and edit the transcription (in Source monitor) to label them. But you must do speaker naming and editing in Source monitor mode. (Open the source clip in the source monitor, then switch to the Text panel/transcript tab. Look in the bottom left to be sure you are in source monitor mode.)

If you have single speaker clips, there is no difference in whether the speakers are separated or not. You can just edit the “Unknown” to your speaker name. If there are multiple speakers per clip, and you edit the names, when you switch to timeline/program monitor view, the names from the source clip will show.

Totally different approaches/changes to accomplish the feature request: Sequence index with an option to select in Project Panel (rather than just timeline). Then you could right-click in Project panel. You could use the metadata columns perhaps, since these are source media transcriptions of clips (the whole clip, not just what is used in the timeline). But you’d probably have to enter something for every clip you want to transcribe. But there’s some magic in metadata that I don’t understand.

An option, if you are going to use the “transcribe untranscribed” button in the timeline/program monitor view, is to set your preferences (Edit → Preferences → Media Analysis & Transcription) to automatic, only clips added to a sequence, and turn on “identify speakers” 

This will then identify speakers when you use the automatic option. HOWEVER, for your purpose, this will transcribe the clips you don’t want transcribed.

The only way to do exactly what you want as a batch/group is to select the clips you want transcribed in the Project Panel and right clip and transcribe/retranscribe.

You can double click a clip in the timeline, switch to the Text panel/transcript tab, and the 3 dot menu will give you the source clip transcribe option, which allows you to set speaker identify.
