Use masks to drive effect instead of alpha

There are many effects that could benefit from a 'mask limiter' instead of using the mask as opacity.

The issue with many effects is if you want to tastefully limit them the mask data should drive the effect rather than cut/fade it away.

The most typical examples would be Mosaic or other blurs and lens flares.

In DaVinci Resolve, if you add a mask input to certain effects the effect itself is limited rather than the result blended.

Here you can see that a mask with no feather, the coverege against the mosaic resolution dictates contribution. As effect it reaches outside of the mask and doesn't become a cut off circle.

It would be really nice to have a mechanism for this with a switch button on the mask to tell whether you'd want it to affect the opacity or the effect itself.
