Why did 2023 Premiere Pro default exports to "Entire Sequence"? How do I change this back?

I know everybody edits differently, but I would have thought having an in/out point in your sequence would have, in modern editing, meant you have specific part of your sequence you want to edit.

Why would PP's new Export bar default to Entire Sequence every export? How can I change this back to what it was before?

Hey there!

Probably the single most enjoyable part of doing something like going to NAB or a SMPTE event is hearing about how other people do the same sort of stuff I do.

Everyone does everything differently! It is endlessly fascinating to me.

And so, yes, giving the users options for setting 'default' behavior for everything in the app, seems sensible to me. The devs hear that, and kinda go ... um ... you gotta be kidding, right? ... right? ... um, .... please?

Nope. I really do think a lot more preferences should be allowed all over the app.

Hi Kevin and Neil, thank you for your replies, support and comments. Certainly agree with the idea that every editor works with the processes that work best in their head, but that may not be the case with others... I just wish they'd give an option to change according to preferences, not unlike what Photoshop did when it changed its save/export/save-as structure.

This is something where I wish they gave an option for the default behavior.

They had a TON of complaints over time about the old behavior. Which is why they changed it. They were responding to user requests, though it took some years to do so.

But the change itself upset other users. Danged if you do or don't, you know?

Which is why a user preference for default behavior would be so good to have.

Hi Charlie,

Thanks for writing this post. Yes, the default used to be to export Sequence In/Out prior to Export mode coming on the scene. I'm not sure why the default was changed. Perhaps a product team member can comment. If you would like the application to return to a previous behavior or would like a preference to change the default, I would support that. I think a better place for your post would be the Ideas forum. I will move it there. I hope everyone will upvote this feature request. I will do so, as well. Sorry for the hassle.

Thanks,
Kevin

Just bumping that a year later, this is still an issue and needs to be changed back.

It makes no sense to have it default to "entire source" when you've put in/out points into a timeline. That's literally what they're for.

It's nonsensical, and results in hours of wasted time a year. Please change this back to the logical UX design like it was pre-2023.

Just bumping that this is still an ongoing issue, and someone exporting a sequence with in/out points for the first time CLEARLY does not want to export to "Entire Sequence" by default.

I'm wasting valuable time dealing with this and suddenly having to re-export every time I get tripped up by this. It's unintuitive and nonsensical.

I know how to change it back. What I want to know is why it was changed to default to "entire sequence" in the first place, and why there is no option to change it back?

In the export window, right under the preview monitor, set the range to Source In/Out.
