You're right: you can set just one style in a running-header/-footer text variable.   Is it not possible to set a Keep in the paragraph style?   Your idea of applying a character style to all instances of "Head 1" and "Head 1 next pg" is sound, I've used some variants of that a number of times and it always worked. It's not really that complicated, even though it may look like it. Just give it a try and see how it works.   But what complicates things is a client who wants to keeps changing proofs. You should point out to them that there's a limit to changes that can be made in page proofs.   As for the crashes, that's an annoying problem indeed. Some thing you can try are 1. Save the document using Save As (to delete the document's change history) 2. Export the document to IDML, then place it again in InDesign. 3. Delete InDesign's caches: exit InDesign, delete this folder (or its Mac equivalent): C:\Users\[User]\AppData\Local\Adobe\InDesign\Version XX.X\es_ES\Caches and restart InDesign.   Good luck! ... As Eugene mentioned, if you want the footnotes at the foot of the page, you'll have to have all the text in a single text frame. In addition to what Willi mentioned: - Your justification settings are fine (though purists will frown at glyph scaling) - Allow hyphenation, making sure to set the spacing/hyphen slider to the left (better spacing, but more hyphens). If I were you I'd convert those GREP styles to local styles. In documents with long stories, GREP styles usually cause delays.
