Question

Can't play back 4k RED footage in real-time

I am facing some serious issue with my new machine to play back realtime 4k RED footage. I keep getting frames drop within couple of secs. I reported this to the customer care and they reverted with a stupid reply without even knowing my hardware details. The reply is as follows:

Hi Prashant,

I hope you are doing well,

As far as I can understand the concern you are having regarding the 4k files to have a real time playback in Premiere pro . there is no 100% surety that the Premiere pro can give you a real-time playback.

In your case, you can use the proxy workflow  which is design for such conditions

Please check the link below and follow the same

The only reason I bought creative package was it was realtime.

I hand picked this config so that it can play realtime 4k. PP 2015.3 was able to play. Why can't the new one?

My hardware:

i7 6900k processor (tried both 3.2 and 4.0 GHz) with water cooler

64 GB Corsair RAM

Quadro p4000

X99 ASUS workstation E motherboard.

850 watt Corsiar RM power supply

1TB samsung 850 pro hard dial

Also 8 TB RAID 0 (zero) hard disk.

It's connected to LG widescreen 34 inch Wide screen monitor and 4k 10 bit monitor

I have been using premiere since Premiere 6 5 (before CS and Pro series). But this time it's turning into a big disappointment.

I have tried every possible thing from reinstalling windows to checking all preferences. Any help will be appreciated

Hey PrashantMac, the 3rd test is in the same timeline as the 2nd, just move the playhead forward a few frames for the new instructions. You can use the default Adobe name for the project when it asks to convert, the exported file names will not change. Just make sure to delete any existing EXPORT files (only) before you run PPBM again, otherwise Adobe will rename the export files for you also.

I have an 8K R3D 6 second clip which I can playback on my 3-year old laptop at 1/8 resolution and after cleaning the Media Cache and Media Cache Files misses 1 frame but the second playback i get perfect playback

First, "real time playback" is nice when it works, but hardly necessary for most workflows. Second, depending on which format/codec out of that RED, any one computer may do better or worse than you'd "expect". Third, the way you work ... which effects you use, plus any 3rd party plugins & all, WILL affect how the playback works.

This last is where a lot of people hit a wall ... they say plop Warp Stabilizer on multiple long clips off the bat ... then add other things. It can't do real-time, it keeps re-analyzing ... it's terrible! Well, yea, just do a test sequence to make sure that WS will work properly on a clip, maybe with your other expected effects applied also, but don't apply it in your working sequences until near the end of the editing process.

Lumetri, especially in multiple layers, kills playback ...  also do it last. As with video denoising.

So work smarter considering PrPro as it exists, not how you think or want it to be.

And also ... download & run Bill Gehrke 's PPBM8 process, to get real good & hard data on how well that entire machine actually works within PrPro.

I am not using any effect. Just Playback. :/ Even in source Monitor it drops. Whats the use of spending so much? And why does Adobe claim 4k 60 fps realtime playback?

R Neil Haugen Did the test. Every export of the sequence took less than a min. The vbs file doesn't execute; gives an error in windows 10.
