Issue with printing with Acrobat Reader X

Hello, we recently upgraded to Acrobat Reader X on our Terminal Servers and we are having a print issue.  When a PDF is being printed, on any printer, the same fonts are not printing like how the pdf is being displayed on the screen.  This is only happening to some of our users and for others the PDF is printing correctly.  Has anyone experienced this issue?  Does anyone have any ideas how I can fix this?  Thanks for any help.

I know this is a dead thread, but the issue still persists to this day.

crescentnews nailed the "cause" on the head.

Non-4:3 aspect ratio desktops will trigger this issue.  Specifically (using Reader X with 2008R2 Remote Desktop Services in my case) the fonts and positions of letters are correct (overall), but each letter is printed slightly wider than normal (exact amount depends on your screen aspect ratio), with the letters sometimes touching or overlapping.  This seems to be printer/driver independent as you can trigger it on the server itself using the microsoft xps printer too (any "printer" in other words).  You can reliably reproduce this by setting your session window size to something like 1280x600 to exagerate the issue, then set it to something "normal" like 800x600 to print it as you see on screen (the only variable is the dimensions of your session desktop).

I verified this is a rendering issue with whatever API Acrobat Reader X uses (Word and notepad render printed text fine for example).  I also saw this in one other application a year ago, and the developer stated it was an API issue with no fix in site (apparently the issue is known but the effort to re-write the render code must be pretty significant, or controlled by Microsoft, etc).  My uneducated guess is that at some point in the "to printer" rendering process there is a calculation that takes the display DPI or ratio into affect before rendering the job to the printer (probably to keep circles from turning into ovals due to the difference).

The fix will have to come from Adobe (perhaps in Reader 11...), or, and I know this won't make most of you happy, try another PDF reader application or an older version of Reader (not sure if the issue exists in 9, but worth a shot if you are not heavily invested in Reader X).  If you go the latter rought I suggest using google to find and research alternatives to suit your needs.

Good detailed analysis. Problem is that, for me, Reader X does NOT send the

document to the printer at all! No printing of any size, shape, etc.

Went back to 9.4. It works just fine.

This problem is fixed in latest Reader update 10.1. Give it a try.

    Hello all,

I am having problems printing with Acrobat Reader 10.1.  I am on a mac--and each time I get a printer error   Error:/Library/Printers/K....

I have changed the file name--doesn't work.  I have updated, still doesn't work.  If I drag the pdf into photoshop it prints fine--.  Is there a fix?

    I am working off a Macbook Pro--10.6.8.

Adobe has been aware of this issue for a very long time now. Still no fix on this issue? A LOT of users have now switched to Adobe Reader X WITHOUT sandbox and still Adobe doesn't even update Reader X because it says the sandbox prevents attacks!!!!

What in gods name?? I think this situation is unacceptable and there multiple widely used attacks out there which can target Reader X in non-sandbox mode.

We have switched to Reader 9.4.5.

I was having this same problem since upgrading to X.  I finally figured this out.  If you go to the print command screen when you are trying to print a document and push the Advanced button on the bottom of the screen...then click on Print As Image.  That solved the weird font print out for me.  I am not sure if it will mess up my other .pdf files that I save prior to the upgrade as I have not tested those yet.  It was wreaking havoc on my new documents that I recently created since the upgrade and printing out all sorts of weird fonts.

This should fix it for everyone as it fixed it for me.

I have resolved the problem by removing Adobe X from my computer and loading

Adobe 9, an older version.   You can obtain an older version of Adobe from the

Thanks for the note. I already did that.

OS is Win 7 32 bit Ultimate SP1 with all  the updates installed.

Did an upgrade to Reader 10.0.1, tried unprotected mode, run as

administrator and image print: nothing gets sent to the spooler. There are

no files in the spool directory.

Otherwise my printer is doing fine. Any ideas or updates will be appreciated.

    Thanks in advance.

We had just started getting this issue on a machine with Reader X BUT it only started after we had to upgrade the old 19" tall aspect ratio monitor to a WIDE 21.5" aspect ratio. Reader X was printing fine upto the point that the new monitor was installed. Almost seems like the type was being streched to fit the new monitors proportions. We turned off the "Protected mode" and it is working fine again. Hope this helps.

I tried turning off "protected mode".  It made no difference in my inability to attach PDF files to my outgoing internet fax.  Still looking for answers.

We have a similar problem XP PRO machine printing to any printer.  I have installed the same software on numerous machines (various XP, Vista, and 7 ) and I have not seen this on any other systems.  Unchecking the enable protected mode box as mentioned does resolve the problem.  I can now print to the usb attached and network printers. Is there an exposure in leaving the setting this way?

Thank you for your post and thank you for those who responded.

Interesting.  Tried printing a pdf file from my bank and from an on-line bank.

Printer is HP Laserjet P1102W and I use Win7. In Adobe Acrobat Reader the printer

default is 11 by 17.   I click on it and it changes to 8.5 by 11 which is

what I want, but the image is now landscape and not portrait which I

have set as default.   The printer thus outputs two pages in landscape

instead of just one in portrait.   Unable to use, "print as image,"  since

it is grayed out.  Don't know what to modify in the registry settings.

    Wow! found my own solution.

Found it at Acrobatusers.com in Lori Kasssuba's excel

lent video, "Printing Documents in Acrobat and ReaderX."

I clicked on the preview screen to get the 8.5 by 11

dimension, then on left side under page handling

I selected  page scaling and shrink to fit from the

drop down menu.  I kept the auto-rotate.  The

preview print screen then went to portrait and all

was/is well.  If you have problems printing, check

out Lori's tutorial.  Well worth the 11 minutes.

I appreciate that you've found another workaround, and I'd be willing to do that to print properly.  Trouble is, I just finished updating all the users at my corporation to Reader X (10.0.1).  That's a little over 300 people who aren't going to be willing/able to jump through that many hoops for a bug in Acrobat's design.

I'm anxiously awaiting a fix, and I'm perturbed to see yet another wonderful release from Adopey.

    Hi,

After applying the 10.0.1 patch the problem still exist unable to print to HP Plotters when protected mode is activated as well as conflict with some of our in-house applications. But when protected mode is turned off, all works fine.

We also had the same issue with printing being squished together when printing while RDP into terminal server.  We found that the higher the display resolution within the settings of the RDP connection the printing was messed up.  If we backed down the display resolution such as 1024x768 the PDF would print just fine.  We just finally went back to Reader 9 so the client could work full screen while in terminal server.
