Open PDF's from last session - bug

We use Reader DC as final stage of digital report generation, for signing. After latest update we notice there is a feature which tries to open older PDF's from a previous session. Turning the option off does not prevent a pop up message asking to do the same. This is causing problems for our report macro since mirror copies of Reader are now often open in background.

First point is that this seems to be slightly random in that sometimes it does open a file and other times it fails to open (and shows yet another pop up msg), so it is hard to create error handling. Second, the obvious question is why would anyone want this feature? It serves no logical purpose.

Please Adobe: could you make it possible to completely dsiable this feature, and disable all associated pop up messages.

Hello Minus1twelfth,

Assuming that you have already updated you Reader application to latest version as mentioned earlier, here are some steps which can help you:

 

The blue color popup which you are seeing comes at times when the last session was unexpectedly crashed. If thats is the case with you, we can help you with it. We would need crash logs from your side to resolve. There is a page to help you for same (How to collect logs when Acrobat crashes, hangs or freezes (adobe.com)).

 

But still if you don't want to see the popup in your application, here are the steps:

1) Close Acrobat/Reader and then Open regedit.exe in Run command.
2) Navigate to the Path: HKLM\SOFTWARE\WOW6432Node\Adobe\Adobe Reader\DC\ and create a key with name "FeatureState"
3) In FeatureState Create a new item with Type: "REG_DWORD" Name: "SessionRestorePromptAbnormalExit" and Value: 0
4) Relaunch Acrobat/Reader and observe that the Blue popup won't be coming again for you.

Hi there

 

Hope you are doing well and sorry for the trouble. As described the option to restore PDF from last session is disabled, still the message pop up for the same.

 

Would you mind sharing the version of the Adobe Acrobat Reader DC you are using? To check the version go to Help > About Acrobat and make sure you have the latest version 21.05.20048 installed. Go to Help > Check for Updates and reboot the computer once.

 

If it still does't work please try to reset the Acrobat preferences to default as described in the help page - https://community.adobe.com/t5/acrobat/how-to-reset-acrobat-preference-settings-to-default/td-p/4792082 and see if that helps.

Thank you Amal & Shrebhat,

 

To be clear, the problem we have is not with Adobe crashing itself (so I don't have crash log), rather we use Reader DC as part of a document handling and signing application (uses Fill&Sign then AATL certificate), so the option to restore last session hangs our own software if other copies of Adobe run in the background. The author of our code is making mod to kill background copies when they appear so this should help.

 

Amal, I have version 2021.001.20145 - so I have action to update this also.

 

Shrebhat, editing registry is last resort for us, but thanks for info anyway. Honest feedback is there seems to be an annoying rise in popup suggestions, so like the return of Clippit by stealth (for anyone old enough to remember that).

Once again thanks, and I will get back if the update still gives us problems.
