Update 21208 of Acrobat Reader breaks the app, it won’t start on Windows 7.

It shows “This program couldn’t launch because the object api-ms-win-core-winrt-l1-1-0.dll is missing” or something along those lines.

...Please fix.

Acrobat Reader 32-bit, Win 7 SP1 64-bit

Same issue here, Acrobat Reader automatically uploaded the update tonight to my W7 PC and asked me to reboot.  Following the reboot the Adobe Reader is toast and I get pop up messages api-ms-win-core-winrt-l1-1-0.dll is missing as well as Error parsing C:\Windows\Microsoft.net\framework\v4.0.30319\config\machine.config  Parser returned error 0x80070005.  For some reason multiple attempts of going back to previous restore points fail (even in safe mode).  I need this fixed ASAP.

From this thread it appears adobe is working on a fix and will post an announcement here. Its possible that they might be able to roll it out through the auto update service that runs independently of their PDF reader. I don’t know but if so then once they have a fix your software might update to a working versions.

in the mean time Sumatra PDF for viewing PDFs is working on our windows 7 machines and is a large functionality improvement thought it does not offer any robust features.

Now I can't even open files with another editor and I get an error.VCRUNTIME140.dll (or VCRUNTIME140_1.dll) I can't work anymore. Please reply.

Yikes, are you running legacy autodesk software like we are? That error you are having is from missing or corrupt MS Visual C++ library. The adobe issue is because they’re latest update is trying to use a dll file from this library that is not present or available for windows 7. This issue you are having does not, on its face, appear related to this issue directly. Its similar and its possible that Adobe is not the only reader editor who updated their software offering without realizing they were making a big mistake. Whats the other editor you are using? In the mean time try Sumatra or Foxit we have those working on our windows 7 machines and find Sumatra to be a HUGE improvement in speed and bug/error reduction from adobe so long as you don’t need to sign PDFs .

Thanks for your reply. Today I'm having a bigger problem than the one I reported yesterday with Visual CC++. Yesterday I was able to use Only Office Editors instead of Adobe, but since today it too has crashed with a new error message: error.VCRUNTIME140.dll. This is a huge problem for me at work because I need to download copies from Acrobat of court rulings and judicial documents with digital signatures and Italian Ministry of Justice codes. No other methods are valid for the Italian state or for working as a lawyer. I’ m lawyer. So I'm asking for the error to be fixed as soon as possible.!!!
Yesterday the error api-ms-win-core-winrt-l1-1-0.dll is missing appeared, like you today a new error appears error.VCRUNTIME140.dll

    Hi All,

The product team has identified the root cause and is working on a fix. We will provide an update soon after the fix is available with the public release.

Thank you, We’ve been preventing computers from getting online to avoid the automatic update self destruction. In the mean time the ones that have we’ve pivoted from adobe products and depending on needs we’ve had no issues with compatibility of Sumatra PDF - if anyone needs just a reader without abiliy to sign this one integrates with windows 7 to allow preview in windows explorer and restored PDF function in our legacy software packages while running significantly faster that adobe reader - no more “out of memory” error or window display issues we has with Adobe. Where we need signing ability we have found Foxit reader works with windows 7 without issue and restored functionality in our legacy software.  Foxit is little smoother and faster than adobe reader was and like Sumatra does not experience the “out of memory” errors or display issues that plague adobe reader. Its interface is not as refined as Adobe but that's not a bad tradeoff for the significant functionality improvement. In the end, pushing us into trying Sumatra and Foxit are a huge win for us. The significant speed in opening and flipping through construction plan sets is a massive productivity boost.

Looks like the latest Adobe Acrobat Reader version compatible with Windows 7 is 25.001.20997:
    https://ardownload3.adobe.com/pub/adobe/reader/win/AcrobatDC/2500120997/AcroRdrDC2500120997_en_US.exe

(It’s 32-bit, and looks like its 64-bit version doesn’t exist.)

At least that’s the version that works under Windows 7, that downloads from a localized regional version (I replaced regional suffix with `en_US` in the distro URL) of the https://get.adobe.com/reader/ page (the default English version downloads the problematic version 25.001.21223 incompatible with Windows 7).

After installing the compatible version 25.001.20997, it makes sense to disable “Adobe Acrobat Update Task” in Windows Task Scheduler to prevent further auto-updating to incompatible versions. I also replaced all `*.exe` files in the `C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Adobe\ARM\1.0` folder with `DoNothing.exe` that does nothing and closes itself immediately right after starting, thus effectively disabling autostart of corresponding applications.

And yes, a good developer NEVER blindly auto-updates to a version incompatible with the current OS version, and only auto-updates to the latest version COMPATIBLE with the current OS version.

Thank you! I’ve been looking for this version download since yesterday and couldn’t find it.

    My system works….. for now.

This version cannot edit a PDF.  The update required is not available for Window 7.  I had no issues before February 17th.  Do you have a solution to get the “editibable” version of Acrobat DC for Win 7??

The update that apparently recently installed ‘broke’ our computer too :(

Presently showing Reader installed on  2/19/2026 (today) with version 25.001.21223.

This has broken a workflow whereby examining a file in the ‘preview pane’ of windows file explorer is an essential step.

I’m sure glad none of our cars can connect to the internet!

How can I go back to the one that worked?

    UPDATE:

I was *about to* try installing the latest from the website - I downloaded the latest, started reading the terms of service and then decided not to proceed based upon what I read.  Apparently the newest version was installed without my permission or clicking on the ‘install’ button because - guess what, the version showing as installed *IS* the same as the version shown on the download webpage….  GRRR…

If there isn’t already a law that prohibits companies from releasing ‘updates’ that ‘break’ your stuff, there should be!

This update ‘broke’ our computer too :(

A day ago I had no issue with the preview pane in windows file explorer allowing me to view the contents of a selected file…  Now, it’s broken!

Please let me know how can roll back the version to the previous version that worked fine.

The version now shows as 25.001.21223.

This must have been an update that happened automatically, as I’ve not installed any updates.

    Thank you

Rolling back did not solve the problem for us or other users as the adobe software re-updates to the broken version and disabling all that through windows services hasn’t been an effective workaround as those options appear to be re-enabled on using the software. So we uninstalled adobe and used their clean up tool and installed Sumatra PDF. During install there is an options button be sure to click that and enable windows preview. If you install without enabling in options you will get the viewer but no preview integrated into windows explorer at which point you can run the install again and check the box to make that part work.

i should note you don’t have to uninstall the broke adobe for Sumatra to work just make it the primary application for opening PDF. This way maybe adobe can auto-update back to working later.

    all the best.

    Thank you.

As I noted in a post and a couple of replies, disabling through Computer Management and Services seems to work the day it is set, but Adobe overnight re-installs the broken version and re-enables updater in Services.

We will take your suggestion to try Sumatra pdf.  Thanks for the heads-up on “options..enable Windows preview.”  We will leave the temporarily-fixed Acrobat on the computer when we install Sumatra.  I hope Windows “default programs for .pdf files” recognizes it, since in Firefox the user can elect “Windows default .pdf viewer”.

    Short  term work around:

PDF files can be opened without Adobe by using web browsers (Chrome, Edge, Firefox), built-in OS viewers, or alternative software. The fastest method is

right-clicking the file and selecting "Open with" followed by a browser like Chrome, Edge, Firefox.

The pdf viewer in Firefox will read pdf files, but often will not print them correctly.  There is a page-fit problem.  I went round-and-round with Mozilla a couple of years ago, but they have never fixed it to work properly.
