Update 21208 of Acrobat Reader breaks the app, it won’t start on Windows 7.

It shows “This program couldn’t launch because the object api-ms-win-core-winrt-l1-1-0.dll is missing” or something along those lines.

...Please fix.

Acrobat Reader 32-bit, Win 7 SP1 64-bit

To solve this, I uninstalled the newest version and installed the 2022.003.20282 version. I don’t know if its the latest version that works on windows 7, but at least it does work.

    64 bit version:
    https://ardownload2.adobe.com/pub/adobe/acrobat/win/AcrobatDC/2200320282/AcroRdrDCx642200320282_en_US.exe

    32 bit version:
     https://ardownload2.adobe.com/pub/adobe/reader/win/AcrobatDC/2200320282/AcroRdrDC2200320282_en_US.exe

Afterwards disable the acrobat update service from the task scheduler and services.msc

Can see more specific instructions on how to disable updates here: https://www.wintips.org/how-to-disable-automatic-update-in-adobe-reader-dc/

Thanks, greatly appreciate these links to earlier versions. FYI, I have Win-7/64 ultimate with an Intel-64 cpu, but only the 32-bit version of the installer would install. The 64-bit version said my hardware/OS configuration was incompatible.

Had the same installer issue, but the 32 bit version works fine and no annoying AI. Also appreciate the info on disabling auto update!

I saw this in a google search but was concerned about malware. Have you tried this source and did it resolve the issue without ill effect or i this hopeful speculation, which is fine. Just gathering clarity before execution.

I tried adding that dll to System32 and SysWow64 as advised by some guy on YouTube, had no effect. Upthread someone mentions that that dll isn’t part of Win 7. Also upthread, a link to an older version that solved the problem for me, but I’m only using Acrobat as a reader, so YMMV.

My company uses legacy software on windows 7 as well which also uses PDF files. So this auto-update out of the blue explosion of legacy usage by adobe is a catastrophic level misstep for the company. Why and how could making this move be approved or missed and not resolved intimidate?

Adobe needs to immediately issue an executable patch that resolves the issue above board letting the users know whats going on not just crippling a huge percentage of their user base who’s entrenched in legacy software.

There’s a new patch Adobe Acrobat Reader 2025.001.21223 available but I don’t know where to find it. I had to uninstall entirely my version and now the recommended one which is AcroRdrDC2500121111_en_US.exe won’t even install anymore...

    Help ,please.

I have the same problem. This dll does not exist in Windows 7.
    And never before.
This dll also in not found in internet for download.
Only version of Windows 8.0 and 8.1 so for Windows 6.2 und 6.3.
But not for Windows 6.1 = 7 where this dll never existed.

    Hello @ML12345

I hope you are doing well, and we’re sorry for the trouble you had.

Thanks for reporting the issue. The error you’re seeing (api-ms-win-core-winrt-l1-1-0.dll is missing) typically indicates the latest Reader update has picked up a dependency on newer Windows runtime components (WinRT API set) that aren’t present on Windows 7, so the app fails to launch.

Suggestion/Workaround: uninstall Reader, run the Acrobat Cleaner tool to remove any leftover components, then reinstall the Reader build that worked on your Windows 7 SP1 machine, and set updates to manual to prevent the same build from reinstalling.

Please note that Windows 7 is end-of-life, and newer Reader builds may no longer remain compatible as Windows dependencies evolve. If you need to stay fully up to date, upgrading to a supported Windows version is recommended.

    Regards,

    Anand Sri.

This is bad and should be analyzed before ! There are enough users with older windows versions.
Who do not have security paranoia if they behave in internet no bad pages, not open suspicious mails.
The Adobe must prevent download for older windows versions if they do not work.
This is easy and also seen at other software.

Same problem - I cannot open Acrobat Reader on Windows 7 SP1 64bit.

It was working fine 24hrs ago, and I have not manually changed or updated anything on the machine since then.
