Acrobat Android app no longer saving edited PDFs back to Dropbox

Hello,

Our team is experiencing a widespread issue with the Adobe Acrobat mobile app and Dropbox integration on Android.

We use Dropbox to store PDF forms and open them in Adobe Acrobat for editing. This workflow has worked successfully for several years. However, for approximately one week, Acrobat has stopped saving edited PDFs back to their original Dropbox location.

The normal workflow was:

  1. Open the PDF from the Dropbox Android app.
  2. Select Adobe Acrobat to edit the file.
  3. Make the required changes.
  4. Tap the back arrow in the top-left corner of Acrobat.
  5. Acrobat saves the edits to the original Dropbox file and returns the user to Dropbox.
  6. A small notification confirms that the edits were saved successfully.

What happens now:

  • Tapping the back arrow does not return the user to Dropbox.
  • The PDF remains open inside Adobe Acrobat.
  • The previous “saved successfully” notification does not appear.
  • The changes are not saved to the original Dropbox PDF.
  • Dropbox does not receive or sync the updated file.

We also tested opening the PDF through Acrobat directly:

  1. Open Adobe Acrobat.
  2. Select Dropbox from the connected storage accounts.
  3. Open the PDF.
  4. Edit the file.
  5. Tap the back arrow.

The changes still do not save back to Dropbox.

This is affecting multiple team members using Android phones in different countries, on different internet connections. Therefore, it does not appear to be related to one phone, account, network or PDF.

We have already completed the following troubleshooting:

  • Updated Adobe Acrobat and Dropbox.
  • Reinstalled both applications.
  • Removed and reconnected Dropbox within Acrobat.
  • Tested different PDF files.
  • Tested different Android phones.
  • Tested different Wi-Fi and mobile networks.
  • Confirmed that editing is being carried out while online.
  • Opened files through both Dropbox and Acrobat.

Adobe Support suggested using Three dots → Save a copy → External storage → Dropbox. However, this creates an additional copy and adds several manual steps. It does not restore the normal integrated workflow of saving changes directly to the original Dropbox file.

We have used the back-arrow saving process for years, and Dropbox Support has also confirmed that opening the PDF from Dropbox, editing it in Acrobat and tapping the back arrow should save the updated file back to Dropbox.

Could Adobe please investigate whether a recent Android app update has affected the Dropbox integration, file handoff or save-back functionality?

Please advise whether this is a known issue and whether a fix is being developed. We would also appreciate a temporary workaround that updates the original PDF without creating duplicate copies.

Hi @ThanyDar

Hope you are doing well and thank you for such a thorough and well-documented report. The level of detail you've provided is exactly what helps us investigate effectively. You've clearly done significant troubleshooting already, and I want to make sure we dig deeper rather than repeat steps you've already tried.

Before I escalate this to the engineering team, I'd like to ask a few questions to help us pinpoint whether this is a regression in the Acrobat app, a change in how Android handles the file handoff, or something in the Dropbox API layer:

A few questions:

  1. Exact app versions: What version of Adobe Acrobat and Dropbox are currently installed on the affected devices? tap on profile icon > About Acrobat
  2. Android OS versions: Which Android versions are the affected devices running? Did any devices receive an Android system update around the same time this issue started?
  3. Dropbox account type: Are you on a Dropbox Business/Teams plan, or personal accounts? I ask because on Dropbox Business accounts, admins have the ability to disable the Adobe integration, which can affect save-back behaviour.
  4. PDF type: Are the affected PDFs standard fillable forms, or do they have any security/permissions restrictions set on them? A permissions-restricted PDF can silently block write-back.
  5. Acrobat sign-in state: Are all affected users signed into Acrobat with an Adobe ID? The Dropbox save-back relies on an authenticated session.
  6. MDM or enterprise device management: Is Intune or any similar tool in use? It has been known to affect third-party storage integration on Android.

Post this in the Acrobat forum (you may need to change the title slightly to avoid a duplicate post error):
