Cannot highlight text in PDF on iPad

I was in the middle of reading chapter 9, highlighting text as I had been for all the preceding chapters in the very same pdf document, when all of a sudden the highlight tool stopped working! My ipencil is working fine, as well as all of the other comment tools, but for some irritating and inexplicable reason I can no longer highlight text....Please help!!!!
