Question

Cant select text on iPad, all other devices working okay

Hi, I'm reading a PDF on my iPad and can't select text to copy or highlight it etc.

I've checked the PDF isn't protected, and also found I can select text from the same document using Acrobat Reader on my Mac.

This functionality is critical so I've had to download Foxit in order to keep working. I can select the same text from the same document no problem using Foxit.
I don't want two readers on my device so unless this problèm is resolved I'll have to remove Adobe. Which irks me as I prefer to limit the number of developers I use.

Any suggestions welcome.

Hi

The issue seems to be a combination of the typeface and using the mobile version of Reader. Here's what I found:

iPad: forum interface > can select

iPad: Acrobat Reader

I could not select at all until I went into Edit mode. Then I could select. I noticed the typeface is Liberation Serif, which I do not have installed.

iPad: Acrobat Reader

While in Edit mode I changed the typeface to Arial. When I clicked Done, I could Select and Copy was available.

I moved to my computer and tested with Acrobat Pro and Acrobat Reader.

Desktop: Acrobat Pro DC

I can select and copywith formatting:

and I can paste to Word. Word changed the typeface to Times New Roman.

Acrobat Reader DC (desktop)

I can select and copy, but not with formatting.

In Word, the typeface changes to this, but the text is fine. I would select it and change the typeface, but it works.

The producer of the PDF is ProQuest Ebook Central, so Adobe had nothing to do with making the PDF. You are only using it to view the PDF. PDFs that are not made by Adobe can vary widely in quality.

The typeface used in the document is Liberation, including several styles.

Liberation is included with Adobe Fonts if you have a Creative Cloud subscription

In addition, I can select text in other files while using my iPad. This one uses Gotham. It seems to be the Liberation typeface that is causing the issue.

Does any of this help?
