Is it possible to get Acrobat Reader to recognize and convert to PDF a dat file?

Actually, there is no single format for a .dat file. That file suffix has been used by many different programs for different purposes. As such, conversion of a .dat file to PDF doesn't really mean anything unless you were to know exactly what program created and uses the file as well as the potentially proprietary format of such a file.
