Gujarati text becomes distorted in Acrobat Reader Reading Mode, while Normal Mode displays it correctly

I am using the free version of Adobe Acrobat Reader on Android.

 

I have noticed a Gujarati text rendering problem in Reading Mode.

 

In Normal Mode, the Gujarati text in my PDF is displayed correctly. The Gujarati characters, matras, and conjunct characters appear properly and are readable.

 

However, when I switch to Reading Mode, the text becomes larger and is reflowed, but some Gujarati characters, matras, and conjuncts become distorted or incorrectly rendered. This changes the visual structure of some Gujarati words and makes the text more difficult to read.

 

The same PDF displays correctly in Normal Mode, so the problem appears to occur during the Reading Mode text reflow/rendering process.

 

I have screenshots showing the difference between Normal Mode and Reading Mode and would like to share them as evidence.

 

Could the Acrobat Reader team please investigate Gujarati Unicode text shaping, font rendering, and complex-script handling during Reading Mode reflow?

 

I would also like to share a concept called "Soni Book Reader". The concept focuses on making PDF reading more comfortable on mobile devices by intelligently reflowing PDF text while preserving the correct structure and rendering of Gujarati and other complex scripts.

 

The concept includes:

 

- Intelligent PDF text reflow

- Correct Gujarati and Indian-language script rendering

- Proper handling of matras and conjunct characters

- Adjustable font size

- Proper line wrapping

- Portrait, Landscape and Auto orientation

- Normal and Dark Reading Modes

- A comfortable layout for long-form reading

 

I have prepared a separate PDF describing the Soni Book Reader concept in more detail. I would like Adobe to consider these ideas as potential references for improving Acrobat Reader's Reading Mode and regional-language PDF reading experience.

    I hope you are doing well, and thank you for the detailed description and the screenshots. I'm sorry that some Gujarati characters, matras, and conjuncts look distorted in Reading Mode, especially since the same PDF displays correctly in Normal Mode.

    To help us look into this further, could you please share a few details:

    • The Android device model and operating system version.

    • The version of Acrobat Reader installed on your device.

    • Whether this happens with every Gujarati PDF or only this file, and, if you know, which app or tool was used to create the PDF.

    • Whether changing the font size in Reading Mode changes how the distortion appears.

    Thank you for your response and for looking into this issue.

    Here are the requested details:

    • Device: OnePlus Nord CE 3 Lite 5G
    • Android Version: Android 15
    • Adobe Acrobat Reader Version: 26.8.4.49084

    I have tested multiple Gujarati PDFs, and the issue occurs with all Gujarati PDFs, not just one particular file.

    The PDFs display correctly in Normal Mode. However, in Reading Mode, the text reflow and line breaks are incorrect. For example, when a question is on one line and its answer starts on the next line in the original PDF, Reading Mode sometimes combines the question and answer into the same line. This makes the Gujarati content difficult to read.

    I have also tested scanned Gujarati PDFs, but Reading Mode/Reflow does not work for the scanned text.

    I have attached a sample Gujarati PDF book with this reply so that your team can test the issue directly.

    I am not sure which application or tool was originally used to create the PDF.

    We have noted the information you provided: OnePlus Nord CE 3 Lite 5G on Android 15, Acrobat Reader version 26.8.4.49084, the issue occurring with all Gujarati PDFs you tested while Normal Mode displays them correctly, and Reading Mode not working on scanned Gujarati PDFs. We also noted that the sample file was created with a third-party conversion tool, Zamzar, which is helpful context.
