Question

How do I get Acrobat Reader to access the “Computers” directory in my Google Drive? It seems to see only “My Drive”.

My question is pretty simple - already stated in the subject field. I’d like to attach a screenshot to show you what I mean but this system doesn’t seem to allow it.

Thanks to all for your replies. I see I do need to make my situation clearer after all.

I have files resident both on my laptop and in Google Drive. On my laptop, they show up in my file manager as “This PC > Google Drive (G:) > My Drive > samplefilename.pdf”. That file will automatically sync with online Google Drive, where it will show up as “My Drive > samplefilename.pdf”.

My online Google Drive has other top-level directories, however: it also has “Shared Drives” and “Computers”. (See screenshot below.)

My problem is that I want to use the Adobe Acrobat Reader *on my iPad* to read files in the “Computers” directory on Google Drive. But Adobe Acrobat Reader seems able to access only the files in the “My Drive” directory.

For me, it’s not an acceptable solution to just move any files I want to read into the “My Drive” directory on my laptop, thus getting them to show up to Acrobat Reader when I want to view them on my iPad. They are already part of an elaborate system of shortcuts on my laptop, and changing their location in my file system would wreak havoc with that system. Moreover, moving individual files as I want to read them isn’t a realistic workaround. Then I’d have to go to my laptop, move them, save them after reading on the iPad, and then move them back using my laptop. That is way too complicated when a simple solution ought to be available -- i.e., to figure out how to have Acrobat Reader access another directory on Google Drive.

Any suggestions will be much appreciated!

From what I can figure out, you should have access to those files in Google Drive for the tablet. You can then view the PDF. If you want to you can use the Open With command and open in Acrobat. A bit of a pain if you are opening up a lot of PDFs that way.

Another option is to use OneDrive or DropBox in place of Google Drive’s Computers folder.

Storage size varies depending on account. For example, OneDrive offers 1 TB storage with Office subscription. DropBox offers 2 GB for free. Box is available on the desktop app, but I don’t see it on the mobile app.

Moving the files to another directory doesn’t work for me, for the reasons explained above. But the “Open in” command works well! Thanks. For some reason, when I open a PDF file directly from a Google Drive directory in my iPad, it doesn’t automatically use Acrobat Reader to read it. Instead, it uses some other PDF reader that has much less functionality (hence my dissatisfaction and desire to use Acrobat Reader).

Does anyone know how I can tell my iPad to default to Acrobat Reader when it’s opening a PDF file?

Thanks again, Dave. This basically solves my problem.

If you mean the “Computers” section in Google Drive, I don’t think Acrobat’s Google Drive browser shows it. I’d try Google Drive for desktop, then use File > Open in Acrobat and browse to the file through File Explorer or Finder.

That’s pretty much what I said a day ago.

You can simply copy-paste the screenshot into the message.

Are you referring to the “Other File Storage” setting in Acrobat?

Are you referring to the “Other computers” folder in Google Drive?

If so, I believe you have use the Open menu.
