Question

Loose all bookmarks after renaming pdf.

Adobe Acrobat reader 23.3.0.26648 Dev.:  Samsung SM-G981U Android 13    Baseband:  G981USQS3HWB6

After making several bookmarks I closed the pdf. Reopened it and all bookmarks are OK.

However, when I rename the pdf and then open it with Acrobat reader, all bookmarks are gone!

Note: Renaming the pdf back to the name it had when it had the bookmarks, they did show up OK.

This issue also prevents me from moving the pdf without loosing all bookmarks.

Hi @Mark29642731n116,

Hope you are doing well. Sorry for your issue with Acrobat Reader Mobile.

The bookmarks you create use the Google libraries, and the Android UI controls them.

Acrobat does not have any controls on how the bookmarks behave when exported or moved to a different location (or opened in a different platform, for instance).

I suggest not renaming the file here for a better experience.

Hope this clarifies your question.

Hi Souvik,

I used the Adobe Acrobat Reader
menu option: Add Bookmark
I'm not so concerned with Acrobat's internals
but I would think Adobe would be concerned with this issue.
If anyone using this app to add dozens
of bookmarks in the course of studying
a large set of books, investing substantial time
& effort. Then, cannot rename or move the PDF
without loosing substantial hours of work.
The users of the Adobe app product, in good fath,
expect it to work as documented or
within reason, implied functionality.

By analogy, if I add a note to a paper letter that is stored in a cardboard folder and that folder is stored in a metal filing cabinet ("Old School"). Then sometime later I rename and/or move that cardboard folder, there is no reason to expect the added note would disappear.

A PDF file is seen as a type of "Container", and when adding or changing something inside the Container should stay in the Container. Renaming or moving a Container is something that happens outside of the Container and therefor should not have any impact on what is inside the Container.

The PDF file is a type of "Container" and therefor what happens inside the Container, remains inside the Container.
Therefor, it should be reasonable to be able to rename and/or move the PDF without fear of loosing anything that was added to or changed inside the "container" (the PDF file).

The Acrobat Reader is violating the concept of a PDF as a type of "Container".
This will reflect on Adobe's product & brand quality.

If Adobe chooses not to make the feature of "Add Bookmark" work properly then the very least Adobe can do is to remove this flawed feature so that users of this product would not waste substantial time.
Sincerely,
Mark Tague

@Mark29642731n116 Thank you for sharing the information.

While I have a bug logged to investigate the issue further, would you mind updating the application to the April release from the store and checking if the problem persists on the latest version?

Also, a few pieces of information would be great:

1. A sample file to investigate;

2. Screen recording of the issue for reference.
