Question

Perform OCR on an image PDF

How can I perform OCR (optical character recognition) on an existing PDF using an iPad? I have an Adobe subscription, but I can't figure this out. It appears that the Adobe Scan app will do this if I use the device to take a picture of a page, but I don't know how to do this to an existing PDF. I have a PDF of a 20-page document that was scanned using an office copier/printer. I know the text will not be highlight-able or editable without OCR. I can't figure out how to perform the OCR on an existing document.

Thanks in advance!

Hi @FredGreco

Hope you are doing well.

As you have mentioned that you want to run OCR on a scanned PDF file. In Adobe Scan you get the feature to scan an image and that runs OCR on the current scan, but because it is a scanned PDF you can run OCR only on the PC (Win/Mac). You can run OCR in Acrobat DC application by using Scan and OCR tool.

For more detail refer to this link: https://helpx.adobe.com/in/acrobat/using/scan-documents-pdf.html

Let us know if that helps.

Thanks,

Harsh

Let me just say to the ADOBE team - this is a huge liability. I purchased the subscription in order to do this work remotely. Why cannot it be done on the iPad. Please add this feature.

It is possible with Adobe Acrobat on Windows or Mac.
