Question

Read Aloud stops working despite enabled Android TTS

Dear Adobe Support Team,
I am reporting a recurring issue with the Read Aloud feature in Adobe Acrobat for Android. The feature previously worked correctly, but it recently began displaying the following error:
“Enable the text-to-speech engine in your device settings so the document can be read aloud.”
Device and application information
Device: Samsung Galaxy Note9 (SM-N9600)
Android version: 10
Samsung One UI version: 2.5
Adobe Acrobat version: 26.9.250367
Text-to-speech engines tested: Samsung TTS and Google Speech Recognition & Synthesis
Troubleshooting already performed
Verified that both Samsung and Google TTS engines successfully produce speech using the Android text-to-speech settings.
Selected Google as the preferred TTS engine.
Tested multiple PDF documents, all displaying the same error.
Cleared the Acrobat cache and uninstalled and reinstalled the application.
Confirmed that no Acrobat update was available through Google Play.
Disabled battery optimization for Acrobat.
Force-stopped and reopened Acrobat.
Restarted the device.
None of these actions has provided a lasting solution.
Important observations
At one point, Read Aloud started working again after changing the preferred TTS engine to Google and restarting the device.
During that session, Acrobat played a premium voice (Arabella). When the premium audio time expired, Acrobat automatically switched to the standard Google TTS voice, and reading continued successfully.
Several hours later, after the application had not been used, I reopened the same book. The original TTS error returned.
I verified that Google remained the preferred TTS engine and could still produce speech normally in Android settings. Force-stopping Acrobat and restarting the device did not restore Read Aloud.
The problem therefore appears intermittent and specific to Acrobat's access to the Android text-to-speech service.
Assistance requested
Could you please:
Investigate whether Acrobat version 26.9.250367 has a known Read Aloud issue affecting Android 10 or Samsung One UI 2.5?
Confirm whether the application has any known problems initializing or reconnecting to the Android TTS service after a period of inactivity?
Clarify whether the transition from premium audio to standard device TTS could affect subsequent Read Aloud sessions?
Provide a permanent solution or an available workaround that does not require repeatedly restarting or reinstalling the application?
I can provide screenshots of the error and the relevant Android TTS settings if needed.
Thank you for your assistance.

    Hi @good_momentbd00

I hope you are doing well, and thanks for reaching out and for sharing such a detailed report. I’m sorry for the trouble you are experiencing.

Your device and troubleshooting details are very helpful. To help us look into why Acrobat loses access to the text-to-speech service after a period of inactivity, could you please share:

    • A screenshot of the error message when it appears (please crop out any personal information). A Small video recording of the steps you are taking and the issue as it occurs would be very helpful.

    • Whether your device is connected to Wi-Fi or mobile data when the error appears.

    • Whether the error appears right after opening a document, or only when you tap Read Aloud after the app has been idle.

    • If you have access to another Android device, whether Read Aloud shows the same error there with the same Adobe ID.

Let us know how it goes.

    Regards,
    Amal
