how come when I click on the speaker icon next to the word nothing happens when I use my iPad? on my desktop when I click the speaker it pronounces the words. My son is trying to read his Chinese words In a beginner book.

Assuming you are referring to the audio file attached in the PDF and using the Adobe Acrobat Reader mobile application on iPad.
Adobe Acrobat Reader for mobile does not support the rich media.
Rich media in PDF relies on Flash, so it's not an option for mobile devices.
In this case, you have to use the desktop application to read the PDF.
Let us know if you are referring to something else or using a different application.
