i went around and around trying to update the reader app for my IPad.  Could not find the option anywhere.  Trying to open a file and it states that I need the updated version.  What can I do?

The only way to update an app on iPad is via the App Store. But the message is probably misleading. You probably need to open the file in Acrobat Reader on Mac or Windows.
