Changing pdf layer under fields

Hello, 

is it possible to save out the field layer (if there is such a thing) of a template and then apply it to a newly uploaded document?

The problem is the following: I need to update something on a document that has been uploaded and made into a template. Right now I upload the edited version of the document (maybe the only change is a corrected misspelling) and I have to recreate the same fields again, which can be quite annoying in a document using multiple fields. 

Another option would be to directly edit the pdf layer.

Is either of these 2 options possible?
