Question

How to improve automatic field detection accuracy?

I create checklists with lots of fillable fields, so I've formatted the templates in Microsoft Word so that field detection is automatic. Solid cell borders, white space, consistent formatting, etc.

However it gets it wrong for a few cells. Adding a few fields manually is possible, but it takes so much time to get them sized and positioned consistently so it looks professional.

I'm sure some snap-positioning tool or improved auto-detection is possible. How can I get this done?

Hi Troy_Palmer9178,

Thank you for reaching out.

In the screenshot, you seem to have opened the Acrobat form. It depends on how the form fields were added; however, we need to check the form to get information.

Please let us know how you have added the form field to the form in Microsoft Word. Also, how are you converting the Word file to PDF? Could you share the step-by-step workflow you use to convert the file?

Please share the Word file where you have added the form fields. We will try to replicate the workflow to see what is happening here with automatic field detection. We will share the information with you.

Feel free to let us know if you have any questions.

Thanks,

Meenakshi

Hi Meenakshi,

Thanks for following up so quickly.

My workflow was very basic. The word document contains a simple table with both blank cells and some cells with text. I saved as a pdf, opened the pdf in Adobe, and then edited it to be a fillable form (all default settings, did not select the box that for "requires signatures"). Adobe's automatic field detection generated text fields in most of the blank cells, but 6 of the blank cells shown in the previous screenshot did not get a field generated.

This checklist is one of many done the same way. Some checklists worked perfectly while others like this one got some wrong, leaving me to manually add the last few fields. It's typically the more complex tables that get it wrong and the tables which have more consistent patterns in the blank cells have fields generated correctly more often. So I'm after both improved accuracy of field detection and/or easier formatting of manually created form fields, where a snap fit would work much better than inputting the left/right/top/bottom position data in field properties, which takes heaps of time for multiple fields.

Note, the word document formatting assists the accuracy somewhat. I purposely used solid black borders, grey fill and "---" text in some cells that I didn't want form fields generated.

Cheers

Troy

Hi Troy_Palmer9178 ,

Thank you for sharing the files.

Please allow us some time to get this behavior checked. We will share the information if there is anything that can be done here.

Thanks,
