LDV Notifications & Final documents

i am increasingly confused by the ldv functionality. how does one ensure that internal documents are never sent to external signers, but internal copied individuals get notifiation that documents have been signed? 

my entity uses ldv for including an internal checklist and agreements, assigning internals to the checklist; internal and external to the agreement. settings were that signers get all documents assigned to them. but recently found out that externals are getting the internal checklist. so now have unchecked the all documents setting. now concerned about those copied not getting notificaitons that documents are available nor will they be able to download in order to save, while absolutely making sure that externals never see the internal checklist. thanks for any guidance.
