Curious about photo quality issues

Hi! I had the two photos attached rejected recently and am wondering what I can do to improve them. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

straighten the image,

sharpen the image,

lighten the shadows

(The noise level at 100%)

In your first, you also have the bird being underexposed. For your second, you could add more contrast.
