Hello, Adobe Community,

Would anyone have a more detailed explanation of what "Illustrative Editorial" is beyond the definition Adobe gives? Thanks.

Anything works probably, if the quality of the picture is good enough. Local brands will have limited range, however. But that's up to you to decide. I do not think that Adobe juges the commercial value of the brand. So your local store around the corner gets accepted as well as a global brand. It's just that the global brand has a wider reach.

Here's another example of a few Editorial images I've submitted that been accepted and sold:

- eBay sign in front of EBay HQ Bldg

- San Pedro Port - the vast sprawling shipping terminal for Los Angeles; I had taken pictures of container ships passing under the Vincent Thomas Bridge. Of course, the ships and containers are covered with company logos, and I didn't want to spend the amount of time it would take to erase all of them. It was accepted as an Editorial image and has sold many times, presumably being used for reports relating to the worldwide supply chain issues following the pandemic.

- The beautiful facade of Stanford University Memorial Church; Stanford is always in the news for something...

They won't necessarily accept any and all images with logos, or of buildings or structures that would otherwise require a property release. The subject matter has to be something newsworthy or that appears in the news frequently.

Illustrative Editorial is brand name products. Some examples, a Shell gas station sign, Oreo cookies, Coke or Pepsi soda cans, Bud Light beer, Black & Decker drill, BMW or Mercedes cars, John Deer tractor, etc... Basically anything that would normally require a signed property release from the company that makes it.

Editorial content is newsworthy.  Some examples are images from the war in Ukraine, people jumping from a burning building, a collapsed parking garage, a life saving rescue, etc...

Both Editorial & Illustrative Editorial content are restricted to non-commercial use only.  Journalism, newspapers, magazines, blogs, documentaries, consumer product reviews, non-fiction fact reporting.

...and obviously Adobe accepts illustrative editorials only. No people in the picture.
