Photos of town centres

I'd like to take some photos of my local town. But I'll make sure that the people in the photos aren't recognisable I.e only the backs of people

Will I need a release and if so how do i get all the strangers permissions.

Correct answer Marianne-Deiters

If the people cannot be recognized, you don't need a model release

Remember the test is whether this person, or someone else would be able to identify who the model is. This is only fair... someone may use the photo in a million dollar campaign, or to sell something that the model finds offensive.

So, they may have distinctive clothes or accessories; they might be in a place that is identifiable, and they know they go there; the group as a whole might be recognisable.

Marianne's answer is correct, but you may still get a refusal because the moderator estimates that a person could be recognizable. I get this in one of 50 cases.

Be also careful for other things like license plates or busines logos and faces on posters etc.
